The King has sent his servants everywhere to spread his will: whoever obtains the Holy Grail, an ancient chalice protected by the fearsome Great Dragon, will receive full amnesty for whatever crimes he might have committed, and the young princess’ hand in addition! One of the less sober knights took this a bit too literally, and grabbed the promised princess before anyone could do anything. Naturally, the perpetrator was caught and brought before court. The King’s decision was swift: this knight will be the one who shall retrieve the Holy Grail!..
Braveheart is an action role-playing game with simple gameplay. The player controls the knight (default name Richard), navigating him on the isometric battle field. There isn’t much exploration in the game, since all the stages are composed of small locations, which the protagonist has to defend against enemy waves. Once all waves have been eliminated, the stage is completed.
The knight has two weapon types at his disposal: a flail and a crossbow. The flail must be spun in a circular movement to crush nearby enemies; the crossbow is used to snipe at targets who are farther away and unwilling to engage in melee battles (such as spellcasters). New weapons become available at the town shop as the player advances.
Money, experience points, health kits, and power-ups are obtained from the bodies of defeated enemies. The power-ups include double damage, speed, shield, fire attack, and others. Experience points can be distributed by the player to raise the hero’s parameters when he levels up. Weapon proficiency, vitality, and other statistics can be increased to serve the combat style of the player’s choice.
