RPG Gamers summary

One Fenix Down, an ambitious RPG developed over the course of a decade, is an homage to SNES-era classics which artfully combines narrative, combat design, and character development. The game stands apart with its turn-based combat system, offering three levels of difficulty to accommodate varying player skill. It additionally boasts an impressive variety of powerful skills, such as elemental magic, martial arts, and monster abilities that significantly enhance gameplay.

The game hosts a rich cast of distinctive characters, each having their individual, and at times conflicting, goals and aspirations. There are 14 playable characters who rotate in and out of play, thus constantly invigorating gameplay with new strategic elements. In addition to the central storyline, players are encouraged to explore the expansive world, where hundreds of unique items and pieces of equipment remain hidden.

The core of One Fenix Down is its gripping plot. Set seven years after the Kingdom of Torloria survived a brutal invasion by the Goa Empire, the nation still struggles to regain its footing. Young men are either conscripted to the frontlines or toiled away in mines for a religious faction that covets a rare resource.

The pivotal character, a young miner, is prompted to defy his fate upon the reemergence of monsters in the mine. With the aim to reconcile with his past, seek redemption, and ultimately prove himself worthy of being the legendary ‘Hero of Torloria’s son, he must interpret an enigmatic message, “You must protect Fate.”

The game underscores the protagonist’s grueling journey that is speckled with hardships and dilemmas. However, the player’s companions might just be the reinforcement needed to confront the impending trials. The essential question that the game poses is whether the characters can band together and shield Fate from the lurking dark forces.
