RPG Gamers summary

Serpent in the Staglands is a role-playing adventure game set in a fully realized world called Vol, inspired by the late bronze age in a Transylvanian landscape, with unique politics, races, and gods. Players take on the role of Necholai, a minor god of a celestial body who descends to the Staglands for a moonlit festival, only to find the way home blocked and immortality slipping away. Seeking answers and aid, players take on a mortal body and the guise of a traveling Spicer, with a chosen party of five, exploring the harsh land, surviving combat encounters and navigating through a non-linear storyline. The game offers a unique experience, with hand-drawn maps, puzzles, and incantation books that players use in brewing potions, and a classless role-playing system that allows them to create their own characters with any combination of over 100 magic, combat and aptitude skills. Combat is real-time with pause, focusing on macro tactical decisions and creative party skill combinations, and the game offers a huge variety of enemies and challenges, including monsters, rogue mages, and mutilated outlaws. The game is designed without auto-populating map markers, checklist quest grinding, and rigid story exposition, instead providing an unmarked map filled with various locations, including wilderness, cities, towers, temples, dungeons, and caverns. With no auto-level scaling or story-blocked map barriers, players can explore freely and write their own journal notes for quests, puzzles, and leads as they investigate. The game emphasizes roleplaying, investigation, and prayer to the RNG god when combat begins, with dynamic item use throughout. The developers promise that there will be no paid updates, patches, or DLC of any kind.
