Chandar is a floating world populated by different races; unfortunately, not all of them are at peace with each other. One day, a young warrior of the Orin race named Jarik, who lived in the small town Hollow Grange, awoke from a terrible nightmare. He saw a mysterious evil creature consuming the energy of the planet. At the same moment, a group of warriors of the Dagani race attacked the town. One of them turned into a horrifying monster when Jarik killed him. A strange stone was coughed out by the creature, and after Jarik touched it, a scar was burned into his hands…

The Legend of Alon d’Ar is a Japanese-style role-playing game with several distinguishing characteristics. The player controls Jarik and a party of characters as they roam the world, completing quests, acquiring items, and fighting enemies. Battles either occur at pre-set points, or are triggered randomly. Combat is a mixture of turn-based and real-time styles, somewhat similar to the ATB system of Final Fantasy games. The difference is that in this game, the amount of time a character has to wait before acting is directly related to the weapon and/or magic spell he/she is using.

The game features heavy customization of weapons and spells. To upgrade them, the player needs to distribute PP (proficiency points) collected in battles. Weapons and spells have different characteristics, which can be enhanced individually by channeling PP into them. For example, it is possible to upgrade the attack speed of daggers by investing proficiency points into the corresponding categories.
