A demo for Randel's Quest is available now on Steam. The game is best described as a slot-driven and Wordle-style roguelike battler.
How the game goes is that players roll the slots for effects and then follow the color hints. They then strike the right word at the right moment. It's important to remember that each word counts, even the wrong ones. In between runs, players bolt new effects onto their slot machine as enemies keep stuffing more into the same machine to keep everyone on their toes. Players can expect lots of surprises, evolving fights, and steady meta-progression.
Specifically, here's how Randel's Quest works. At the beginning of each turn, players spin a three-reel machine with one reel per color. There are three colors. Green means right letter and right spot, then trigger the Green reel’s effect. Meanwhile, Yellow is right letter but wrong spot and trigger the Yellow reel’s effect. Finally Grey means that the letter is not in the word and trigger the Grey reel’s effect. Once that's done, players have to strike with the right word at the right moment.
For those excited about Randel's Quest, key features are:
- Build the machine: Unlock and slot new effects into the reels during each run.
- Enemy escalation: Foes do not spin and add nasty effects and counters into the pool as players advance.
- Hack the machine: Meet Slotto, a slot machine hacker who can help with reroll, clone, delete, or upgrade effects.
- Shop with hints, not money: Meet Jack, a merchant selling essentials like potions and rare oddities like a plant or an egg.
- Wordle-based economy: Buy and hack using a hint-driven currency. The color results are the resources.
