Borderlands 4 Challenges Vault Hunters to a New Raid Boss

The fight begins May 28.

Something big is happening later this month in Borderlands 4. Vault Hunters looking for an endgame challenge are invited to take part in the Raid Boss 2 encounter. It's coming to the game on May 28 as part of the free Version 1.7 update.

The Raid Boss 2 encounter focuses on Subjugator and Thol the Invincible. These two have actually been languishing in their service to the Timekeeper. They’ve spent ages isolated on an island off the coast of the Fadefields and waiting for a worthy challenger to come along.

When Vault Hunters first start this encounter, they'll need to battle the hovering Subjugator and the hulking Thol in a tag-team matchup. Initially, the two take turns clashing with players but later join up for a deadly dual attack.

However, when the first of the two falls, the real battle begins. That's because when one of the bosses is eliminated, it empowers the survivor. They'll then retreat to their domain where they'll be at full power. The ascended form of each boss features different abilities to contend with though no matter who they're up against, it's going to be a life-or-death duel.

Loot Drops

Those able to defeat the Subjugator and Thol the Invincible get the chance to get their hands on some powerful new rewards.

There's the Pearlescent weapon known as the Jail-Broken Gatling (Ripper SMG). How it works is that for each hit on an enemy, players can gain a buff that increases fire rate, damage, weapon recoil, and the chance to fire additional projectiles.

There's also new Class Mods. In particular, each Vault Hunter comes with a unique Class Mod in Subjugator and Thol the Invincible's loot table. Even the sixth Vault Hunter joining Borderlands 4 later this year gets a Class Mod that's unique to the Vault Hunter.

Finally, there are the four new Legendary items which are:

  • Lockjaw (Torgue Assault Rifle): Fires explosive projectiles that bounce between multiple targets.
  • Shammy Kablammy (Tediore Pistol): Douses enemies in hot Moonshine, then throws an explosive projectile when reloading that burns doused enemies with Incendiary damage, scaling with how many targets players lit ablaze
  • Flak Cannon (Vladof Heavy Weapon Ordnance): Shred enemies with a hail of bullets.
  • Collector (Order Shield): Weather any storm with this Energy Shield that has a huge capacity and a quick recharge rate, offset by a longer recharge delay.
