Good news for fans of the Lufia franchise! That's because the series is finally getting an official release for the PC. Even better is that it's not going to be one but two games. Developer Taito is releasing Lufia I & II The Sinistrals Saga into one convenient package.
Lufia follows the exploits of the hero Maxim and his quest to defeat the Sinistrals. Then after his death, this task is taken up by his descendants through several generations.
The Fortress of Doom
Lufia & the Fortress of Doom was first released in 1993 and published by Taito for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It's the first title in the Lufia series of video games and the only game from the series to be released under the Taito label in North America. The game was generally well-received and spawned multiple sequels.
The story follows The Hero, Lufia, Aguro, and Jerin. They're on a quest to prevent the resurrection of four superpowered beings called Sinistrals. As the story moves forward, players get to learn more about the political and personal lives of the subjects of kingdoms all around the world. The game offers top-down exploration and combines with traditional turn-based combat using 2D sprites.
Rise of the Sinistrals
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is the second game in the series and first released in Japan back in 1995. It was later launched in North America and Europe in 1996. The game serves as a prequel to the first title. This time the story puts focus on the ancestor of the first main character, Maxim. It also explains how war between mankind and a group of gods called the Sinistrals started.
Lufia II made various changes compared to the first game. For one, dungeons no longer had random encounters. Then there are the hundreds of puzzles throughout the game that range from simple to extremely challenging. Lufia II also introduced new skills like the different weapons that players could use to stun monsters or solve puzzles, among others.
Talking about the upcoming release of Lufia I & II The Sinistrals Saga, Lufia series Game Designer Masahide Miyata shared in a post that it made him really happy to learn that a lot of fans continue to send support to a game he created more than two decades ago.
Lufia I & II The Sinistrals Saga is releasing digitally on Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2027. Physical editions for each platform are planned to be announced at a later date.
