February is here and there's a lot to celebrate in Marvel Contest of Champions. Let's start with Black History Month and prepare to welcome two powerful Black Super Heroes.
The Charismatic Leader
First is none other than M’Baku, the charismatic and formidable leader of the Jabari Tribe. Aside from being one of Wakanda’s most powerful warriors, he's also seen as a frequent rival of T’Challa. He is a traditionalist and worships the White Gorilla known as Ghekre.
He and his tribe made the decision to live in the isolated mountains and away from the rest of Wakanda. This is mainly due to ideological differences. He and his tribe reject the technological progress that's been embraced by T’Challa’s leadership. While often seen challenging T’Challa’s rule, ultimately his motivations are a result of a deep belief in maintaining Wakanda’s ancient traditions.
M'Baku joins the roster on February 12.
The Prodigy
Adam Brashear had always been a prodigy. From being a college football star to some who had multiple Ph.D.s. He even earned two Silver Stars while serving as a Marine in the Korean War. Then he was assigned to lead Project: Pegasus, which was an attempt to harness the power of antimatter.
One day, there was a reactor explosion and both Adam and his fellow Marine Conner Sims were caught in it. While Conner was vaporized, the reaction stabilized within Adam’s body and gave him the amazing powers of the Blue Marvel.
When his identity as a Black man was revealed during a battle fighting with the Avengers, Adam was asked by the President to retire. It seems that during the 1960s, the country was not ready for the most powerful man in America to be openly and unapologetically Black. For decades, he obliged, but after losing much of his family in another accident, he has since returned to stand against the ever present threats of the modern world.
Blue Marvel makes his presence felt starting February 26.
