Of Ash and Steel is finally out. The game is available for $29.99 though players can enjoy the 20% launch discount for a limited time.
At its core, Of Ash and Steel is an experience that's inspired by old-school RPGs released around the turn of the millennium. It's a game that takes the time to tell a story and does it at a steadier pace. However, it does so without holding the player's hand in the process.
Reading and Listening
One of the things that players need to remember when playing that game is that they'll have to read or listen quite a lot. That's because the game has a rather extensive story to tell especially as it features a lot of nuances and even intricate details. In addition, the game has been carefully crafted with players being able to experience the vast lore.
Don't Rely on the Map
Compared with other RPGs, the maps in Of Ash and Steel are different. That’s because they won’t offer any quest markers. Instead, players need to listen carefully to what the townsfolk are saying and then read the quest journal. For those who know how to pay attention to detail, they'll be surprised to learn just how quickly they can find their way around the world where the game takes place.
A Different Experience
Once they start the game, players should not expect to become the hero immediately. They start as a simple man, a cartographer named Tristan. His bread and butter is creating maps. The thing is, Tristan has never wielded a sword in their life but now has to learn how to defend themselves in a hostile world. What this means is that they'll have to master combat mechanics by learning to manage their stamina, time attacks, and even parry. Players have to determine which combat stance and weapon types suit them best.
In a statement, the team over at developer Fire and Frost shared that they’re thanking everyone for all the support they’ve received. The team revealed that everything the community has given them helped them “push forward and reminded [them] that [they’re] not walking this path alone.
