Online Multiplayer Planned for The Binding of Isaac

It's been more than a decade since The Binding of Isaac was first released. Players who have continued to support the game are in for a real treat. That's because there's a plan to introduce online multiplayer to the game.

While no official statement has been made, this was teased by Executive Producer Tyrone Rodriguez through a post on X (formerly Twitter). In that post, he shared a screenshot of what's being worked on for the game. There's going to be an option to add two additional players through an online lobby.

Now to be fair, local multiplayer has long been part of the game. However, adding this feature is sure to make the veteran players happy while enticing new ones to join. Still, introducing this particular feature years after the game has been released is indeed a surprise.

There's no definite date as to when this new feature is officially going to be introduced. However, in another post Rodriguez mentioned that it's going to be soon with the beta being planned to be available only on Steam.

The Binding of Isaac is a randomly generated action RPG shooter that feature heavy Rogue-like elements. The game follows the story of the titular Isaac who find bizarre treasures during his journey. These treasures allow him to change form giving him superhuman abilities as well as letting him fight against mysterious creatures.

One of the many ways that the game has managed to last this long is being able to release a lot of add-ons over the years. Other key features of the game include:

  • Randomly generated dungeons, items enemies and bosses. This means each run through is unique.
  • More than 100 unique items that not only give powers but allow you to change your character.
  • At least 50 enemy types each with the ability to become "special" making them extra deadly but they also drop better loot.
  • Over 20 bosses.
  • 4 full chapters spanning 8 levels.
  • More than 3 unlockable classes.
  • Multiple endings.
  • Tons of unlockable items, enemies, and bosses, to name a few.
