Face Down Fate
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN tells a fifty-year saga of those having nowhere to go and their desperate struggle to find a home. The story is set in San Francisco sometime in 1915. The story focuses on Makoto Daito, born to an American father and Japanese mother. His world is one where he faces harsh persecution and one of the main reasons is his Asian heritage.
After losing both of his parents, Makoto finds himself completely alone and in an act of desperation makes the decision to risk everything and travel to his mother's birthplace. However, as he journeys across the Pacific, he learns that there's no such thing as a "free ride" and that this one choice is set to forever change the course of his life.
5 Eras and 5 Cities
The story itself unfolds across a version of Japan that may have existed in another life altogether. Players are immersed in five sprawling cities, each one modeled after real locations of their respective eras. There's Kokura, Fukuoka in 1915. It's said to be the home of one of the largest foundries in the world. Then next is Kure, Hiroshima in 1929. This is a port town that's dominated by Japan’s largest naval arsenal and heavily influenced by the presence of yakuza organizations.
The story then moves to 1943 in Minami, Osaka. Considered as the biggest entertainment district in western Japan, it's set against the ever-rising tension of a world at war. After that it's 1951 in Atami, Shizuoka. This bustling seaside getaway is synonymous with tourism in postwar Japan. Finally, the story goes to Shinjuku, Tokyo, in 1965. This is Japan’s most iconic pleasure district, a city of swirling and unpredictable chaos.
