CD PROJEKT RED and TRIGGER announced that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is coming out this fall. This should be good news to fans around the world considering that season one was released way back in 2022.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is being directed by Kai Ikarashi (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, SSSS.Gridman) with Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) serving as the lead designer. Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor also returns as story writer while also being the showrunner and producer.
Much like the previous season, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 features a standalone story as it throws a fresh cast of characters into the darkest corners of Night City. In a post, the studio shared that the new season is set to introduce “a raw, gritty take on the world of the future.”
As part of the announcement, a teaser trailer has been released which can be viewed here.
A Standalone Story
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077 and is a standalone tie-in to the video game. The anime tells the story of David Martinez, a talented student studying at the prestigious Arasaka Academy and currently facing financial struggles. After suffering a personal tragedy, he meets and falls in love with an enigmatic young cyber hacker named Lucy. It is then that David is introduced to the world of edgerunners. These are cybernetically-enhanced mercenary outlaws, also known as cyberpunks, and accept jobs that target the Arasaka Corporation.
David joins this crew and learns that he apparently has an abnormally high tolerance when it comes to cybernetic implants. As a result, he starts to push his physical and emotional limits to protect his loved ones and become a legend in the criminal underworld of Night City.
The anime was released on Netflix and in its first week, was reported to have 14.88 million hours of viewing. The show received critical acclaim with many praising the writing, characters, action, animation, music, and worldbuilding. It has been reported that the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners helped increase the sales of Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a narrative-driven and open-world RPG that's set in Night City. The game is available for the PC through Steam.
