Developer Another Angle Games and Owlcat Games released a new environmental trailer for Shadow of the Road. It gives a peek into some of the locations that players can visit in the course of their journey across 19th-century Japan.

Shadow of the Road is set in an alternate version of 19th century Japan, particular during the Bakumatsu Period. During this time, the country has seen the clashing of factions and world views. Then there's the group of travelers who somehow have become embroiled in the war between Shōgun and Emperor.
What makes things difficult is that the conflict doesn't simply involve the traditional soldiers. The East Nippon Company has joined the fight and bolstered the forces of the Emperor with advanced mechs. They're wreaking havoc not only on military forces but even the civilians. That's not all as the kami and yōkai, entities from Japan’s folklore and mythology, have their own goals.
The Story
Shadow of the Road tells the story of Tokugawa's spymaster, who goes on a journey to protect a boy who is said to have immense and uncontrollable powers. Helping him are ronin warriors Satoru and Akira. As the adventure intensifies, the group is joined by various characters, each one having their own history and motivation. They confront escalating challenges, strive to reclaim their honor, and change the course of the war.
In the game, each choice guides the characters along unique paths and shape who they become. The decision of the players determine if they form new bonds, sever lifelong friendships, or mend family ties.
The Team
The game has players take on the role of a master strategist and lead an elite team of characters having different backgrounds and skills. Each character brings with them their own motivations, desires, and fears, and sets them on unique paths.
When it comes to fights, players can experience turn-based combat that has that samurai tactical vibe. Each team member brings unique abilities to the battlefield. In addition, their personal goals and relationships influence every encounter. Players have to master these dynamics and strategic maneuvers to lead the team to victory.
