Square Enix announced that they're be releasing on Steam a new version of Final Fantasy VII. Once it comes out, the current version is going to be renamed as Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition.

Once the new version has been launched, the Final Fantasy VII - 2013 Edition won't be available anymore on the Steam Store. However, those who already have it in their library can continue to have access to it. The new version is being listed on the Steam Store as Final Fantasy VII.

The studio shared in a post that all those who already have the 2013 Edition are eligible to access the new version for free. Both versions remain accessible in the owner’s Steam Library once the new version is released.

The only issue is that save data won't be compatible between the two versions. That means the 2013 Edition saves only work with the 2013 Edition and the new version saves only work with the new version.

Final Fantasy VII is set in Midgar, a city that’s controlled by the mega-conglomerate Shinra Inc. It seems that the No. 1 Mako Reactor had been blown up by the rebel group AVALANCHE. This group was actually secretly formed to wage a rebellion against Shinra. Cloud, a former member of Shinra's elite combat force, SOLDIER, was involved with the bombing of the Mako Reactor. The question that remains is whether Cloud and AVALANCHE can protect the planet from the huge and formidable enemy that is Shinra.

One of the interesting features of the game is players being able to show off your in-game accomplishments. In addition, they can also put their gaming skills to the test with 36 new achievements just waiting to be unlocked. This should be good for those who are familiar with the franchise and those who are new to this RPG classic. It goes without saying that this version has been optimized for the PC, in particular it’s been updated to support the latest hardware and Windows Operating Systems.

So far there’s no actual date on when the new version is being released. For now, enjoy the current version of Final Fantasy VII on Steam.
