A lot of video games are often based on fiction stories. Every now and then there are titles that are based on real events. One of these is STAY ALIVE MY SON: A True Story About A Father's Search For His Son from UME Studios. A PC version of the game is now available on Steam.
The game was first released back in 2022 and initially designed to be a VR experience. With the release of the PC version, the studio hopes that the story can live on and can now be experienced by more people worldwide.
Remembering a Dark Past
The game was released last week which also serves as a commemoration of the event that inspired the game. It was on April 17, 1975, when Phnom Penh fell and started what would be the darkest chapter in Cambodia’s history. The release of the game for the PC coincided with the 50th Anniversary of what is now being dubbed as the Cambodian genocide.
Witness History Unfold
STAY ALIVE MY SON: A True Story About A Father's Search For His Son is a game that covers 45 years. This interactive narrative experience immerses players in the life of Yathay Pin, a survivor of the Cambodian genocide. They get to witness history unfold through his eyes and where each decision they make shapes his poignant story of family separation, survival, and resilience. The game is based on the true events that are described in Yathay Pin’s novel titled Tu Vivras Mon Fils (Stay Alive My Son). There's no question that the game delivers an authentic and deeply moving experience.
The journey starts outside Yathay’s home. There they meet an elderly digital recreation of Yathay himself, which is powered by AI. Through light gameplay mechanics players get to delve into the psyche of a father that's haunted by his past. In a ceremonial rite intertwining that fate of the players with Yathay, their hands become his and his memories become their own. As they descend into his recollections, they embark on a quest for redemption and understanding.
