The Legend Returns as Gothic 1 Remake is Now Available

The remake retains the core pillars of the original while modernizing the experience.

The wait is finally over and the legend is back. That's because the Gothic 1 Remake is now available. This faithful remake of the genre-defining classic RPG invites everyone to return to the Valley of the Mines.

Gothic was first released back in 2001 and managed to obtain legendary status through a combination of immersive world-building, reactive NPC behavior and ecosystem, and challenging progression. Then there's that unmatched sense of player freedom. What makes this new version even better is that it's able to preserve those core pillars while at the same time modernizing the experience for a new generation of players.

Fans should be happy to know that much like the original version, Gothic 1 Remake also refuses to hold the player's hand. For example, there are no glowing trails that lead players across the world. In addition, enemies don't magically scale to the level of the players.

Welcome to the Colony

The game is set in the Kingdom of Myrtana, currently being invaded by a relentless horde of orcs. In order to obtain powerful weapons needed to repel the orcs, King Rhobar II orders the vast quantities of magical ore to be mined. This results in every available prisoner working in the Khorinis mines. To make sure that no one escapes, the King has his most skilled mages to erect a magical barrier. However, that same magic spirals out of control resulting in everyone being trapped inside. The prisoners rebel which transforms the mine into a lawless territory ruled by the Colony’s most brutal inmates.

A True RPG-Experience

Gothic 1 Remake continues to be faithful to the original experience. That is because it rebuilt the game from the ground up while also preserving that unique sense of unrestricted exploration and satisfying progression. The dark and gritty world of the Colony is richly detailed and immersive. Meanwhile, the NPCs and wildlife follow realistic daily routines independent from the player. There's no question that the remake enhances the experience with expanded and more detailed questlines. There are also additional NPC routines and reactions along with new traversal abilities and a fully modernized combat system.

Gothic 1 Remake is being developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic. The game is available for the PC via Steam along with consoles PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S.
