Chrono Trigger — Complete Walkthrough & Reference

Characters

  1. CronoCrono is the main character of the game. He never speaks because he's a mute or something. He is one of the strongest characters in the game for levels 1–96? After that, someone else climbs the top.
  2. LuccaLucca is an inventor and Crono's best friend. She has very powerful magic and when combined with Marle (Antipode *), they create a deadly force.
  3. MarleMarle is Princess Nadia in disguise and is in love with Crono. She is one of the weakest fighters but her magic makes up for it. She has many enhancing spells, healing spells, and a reviving spell. She's a personal favorite.
  4. RoboRobo is a robot that Crono and company finds in 2300 AD. He possesses a wide variety of skills. He's quite slow so cram him full of Speed Tabs.
  5. FrogFrog, whose real name is Glenn, went with his friend Cyrus to try to defeat Magus. They were beaten very badly. Since then, Glenn has been working indirectly to protect the throne. Frog is a strong swordsman who also possesses some healing magic.
  6. AylaAyla is a prehistoric chief who is trying to protect her tribe from the Reptites. She has no magic but is one of the strongest fighters in the game. She has the ability to steal from others, her attacks are super-strong, and she becomes the goddess of war after level 96.
  7. MagusMagus is one of the most misunderstood persons in the game. After a horrible incident in his childhood, he has been driven on a lifelong quest to kill Lavos at all costs. At the beginning (during your first game), he is one of the most valuable members of your party (if not the most valuable) but later you may wish to dispose of him, just to see Frog kick his butt.

Magic and Special Abilities

  1. Crono commands lightning magic and a variety of sword techniques.
  2. Lucca — Let's just say Lucca likes fire.
  3. Marle is the magic caster of any team, possessing a lot of magic that heals, revives, and speeds up fellow teammates. A must for any team.
  4. Robo has a lot of attack techniques and a few healing techs.
  5. Frog has a combination of healing and attacking techniques.
  6. Ayla, like Robo, has no magic but a lot of attacks and she can steal and heal.
  7. Magus — Ohmigosh! He has level two of Lightning, Water, and Fire, plus a huge assortment of Shadow spells.

Weapons

  1. Crono — Katana-type blades
  2. Lucca — Guns
  3. Marle — Crossbows
  4. Robo — Different Arms
  5. Frog — Broadsword-type blades
  6. Ayla — Her fists
  7. Magus — Scythe

Walkthrough Rules

  1. Fight every monster you see.
  2. Save often.
  3. Use other save spots (unless you're sharing) when unsure about a decision you're about to make.
  4. Stock up before each encounter cause you don't know what you'll face.
  5. If you open the magical treasure boxes in the past but don't get what's inside until the present or future, the item will upgrade and you still get to get what was in the past.

1000 AD — The Millenia Fair

Beginning

The time is 1000 AD. Crono's mother wakes him up for the Millenia Fair that is taking place in Leene's Square. She also tells Crono that his friend Lucca has invented something and is asking him to see it. Talk to her again to get some spending money.

The Millenia Fair

Upon entering Leene's Square, you'll see a typical carnival: Games, people, etc. There are many things to do:

  1. Bet on the races (Middle of bottom level of fair): Actually, I have never won before but since it's free, have fun trying. I've heard from a fan there's a pattern.
  2. Test of strength (Left of the bottom level of fair): Go up to it and press A. When you think you've backed up as far as you can, press A again. Win and get a silver point.
  3. Bekkler's House of Horrors (Right of the bottom level):
    • 10 Points — Guess the guy: What you do is guess who's who from a choice of three dudes: Vicks, Wedge, and Pierre. First time, you get a doll, afterwards, 2 ounces of cat food.
    • 40 Points — Copy the clone: Copy the clone's movements. When you win, you get a clone of whoever just played it. Later, if you play with a person who already has a clone, you get 10 ounces of cat food instead.
    • 80 Points — Monster Mayhem: In this game, keep the monsters back and make sure to not roast the person above the fire. It's easy if you go from right to left since the blue light comes up every few cycles and you're right there.
  4. Soda guzzling contest (Right of middle level): Press A as fast as you can to drink a can. Win, get 5 silver points. Rapid controller recommended.
  5. Gato, the dumb cat (Left of middle level): Beat him up, win 15 silver points. A good way to get stronger and richer at the beginning of the game.
  6. Prehistoric Dance (Right of middle level): "Just shut up and dance."

When you enter the middle level, you will bump into a girl. She will drop her pendant. Check to see if she's okay. After that, go over and pick up the pendant and give it back to her. She will ask to join you. Say no, because this will be later used against you. When she asks you again, say yes.

Do's and don'ts: Do lead the cat to the girl on the opposite side of the level. Don't eat the food on the counter near the cat. Don't convince Marle to sell her pendant.

When you're all done, talk to the girl sitting on the water fountain at the bottom level or wait it out. Marle will suggest going to see Lucca's invention. Before you make it, Marle wants to buy some candy. Be patient and wait, then continue to the top level. There, try the machine and then talk to Marle. She tries it too but her pendant screws the machine, sending her into a blue gate. Crono picks up the pendant and follows her in.

600 AD — Guardia Kingdom

Truce Village and Guardia Forest

When you exit the mountain you landed in, you should visit the town of Truce. At the inn, Toma will tell you that people are looking for Queen Leene but you will find out that they later found her in Guardia Forest. To get to the castle, go through Guardia Forest, making note to turn right when you enter to find two sparkling spots (The top is a Power Tab, the bottom, a dud). Then, find your way to the castle. You enter and find out that you are the hero that saved Leene. She calls you to her room, where you find out she's really Marle. Something happens and Marle is wiped from reality. Go downstairs and you'll meet up with Lucca. She tells you that Marle is really Princess Nadia and that someone was supposed to save the real Queen Leene. Since that didn't happen, Marle ceased to exist. You have to save Queen Leene.

The Cathedral

When searching the castle for clues, you meet the mysterious chancellor, who you find out, visits the cathedral everyday. Go there and you'll see some nuns praying. You find the Royal Pin and the nuns become monsters. Frog jumps in and helps you. He joins your party. Play the organ to open the secret door. Visit each room, making sure you find the room on the right side where there is a statue of Magus (treasure!). On the left side, the room with the treasure boxes also contains the secret Naga-ette Bromide, in the drawer to the left. Just switch on all the switches and play another organ to get to the boss.

At the end, you'll find Queen Leene and the chancellor. The queen moves out of your way as you kick Yakra's butt. After you beat him, make sure you check out the treasure boxes.

Upon returning to the castle, Frog will leave you. You'll find Marle where she disappeared. Now head back to the mountains.

1000 AD — Return Home

I'm Home, Miss Me?

Going back to the mountain behind Truce, you'll find a gate. Lucca shows you the Gate Key and opens the gate, sending you back to 1000 AD. Lucca goes off to fix something and you escort Marle back to the castle. At the castle, the chancellor (hmm...) accuses you of trying to kidnap her. You go to court where three questions are asked. Based on those questions (Be honest to win) and the Do's and Don'ts at the fair, you will either be judged innocent or guilty. It doesn't matter, you'll still be sent to jail.

The Escape from Guardia Castle

No matter what the verdict is, the chancellor tells the guard that Crono is to be sentenced to death in three days. He is put in jail. Be sure to drink from the mug and get the Ether (if you were found not guilty). You can wait out the three days or annoy the guards. Choice A is better for first timers cause there's lots of stuff to get. Make sure you find a way to get to the cell next to your original one cause there's cool stuff there. In your search, you'll find a dude under the guillotine. Save him.

Search the dungeons. If you chose to wait the three days, and Lucca saved you, search each guard to get a tonic. Look around the dungeon since you'll never be able to return to it later. There should be a hole in the walls somewhere and you're able to scale the outside of the castle to access other areas. You'll find some neat stuff there. When you've finished searching, make your way out and you'll be met by a mechanical dragon. Beat the head, then the wheel, then the body.

When you escape, guards will chase you. Marle joins you after a big debate with her father. You are forced into an area with another gate. Jump in.

2300 AD — The Future

Trann Dome and Lab 16

You'll find yourself in the future. Exit the current dome and explore. At the Trann Dome, you'll find out that you're in 2300 AD. Use the Enertron (that big rock with a crack down the middle), then leave.

You'll make your way to Lab 16. Avoid the rats cause they steal from you. There is no boss here so don't panic. Once out, you have two choices of locations to go to. Don't go to the Sewer Access System because there's no need at the moment.

Arris Dome

Go to Arris Dome, where you meet the leader Doan and people desperate for food. Go down the ladder and enter the room. After crossing the catwalk, you'll meet the boss Guardian. Kill the spheres first, then him. After beating him, you'll find a man who's dead. You find a seed and if you check again, he has an important note. Go back to the catwalk and chase the mouse. He'll reveal the code to open the other door. Make sure you enter the code on the second terminal.

You'll make your way into a computer room that tells you your next destination. Marle also accesses the computer library and you witness The Day of Lavos, 1999 AD. After seeing it, the group decides to change the past, like with Leene/Marle, so that this event will never occur. When you go back up the ladder, Doan will give you the Bike Key.

Motor Racing Down Lab 32

Leaving the dome, make your way to Lab 32. A robot tells you that he'll let you past if you can beat him in a race. I recommend using a nitro when you have 50–70 kilometers left. If you don't win, you can still walk through Lab 32, and although there is some treasure, I do not advise this at your current level.

Proto Dome

After exiting the lab, go to the Proto Dome. Inside, you'll find a robot that has been deactivated and a door that is locked. Lucca repairs the robot and the party gives it a name. Robo tells you that the power is off and it has to repair the system at the factory to the north. You will have to leave Lucca or Marle behind.

Remains of the Factory

There are two wings; go to the right one first. Inside, you'll find the codes:

  • Barrel 1: X A
  • Barrel 2: B B
  • The final gate: X A B Y

Make sure you find the controls to the crane and use the first two codes. There are some inaccessible rooms that you can only get to by getting on the assembly line and running into a robot. On the left wing, you'll have to activate the computers and kill some monsters. After entering the last gate (by typing the third code above), Robo tries to repair the system but fails. The alarm is started and the party tries to leave the factory. Climbing the stairs (elevators are bad during emergencies), you find Robo's friends, who all have been reprogrammed. They beat up Robo, then turn on you. You beat them and carry Robo back to the Proto Dome for repairs. Robo is repaired, then the party goes through the gate. It goes berserk and…

End of Time

Spekkio, Master of War

…they end up at a weird place with lights. Nothing's there but an old man by a lightpost. He tells you that you're at the End of Time and ended up there cause there were more than three in your party. You have to leave one member there and start to leave. He calls you back and tells you to go to the room behind him.

In that room, you find Spekkio, the Master of War. He'll teach you magic (It's important, so do it) if you WALK around the room 3 times, touching each corner. Each member will receive:

  • Crono: Lightning
  • Marle: Ice
  • Lucca: Fire
  • Robo: No Magic.

Upon leaving, you'll find three gates:

  • 1000 AD — Medina Village
  • 2300 AD — Proto Dome
  • 65 Million BC — Mystic Mountains

Do as what the old man says and go back to 1000 AD.

1000 AD — Medina Village

Medina Village and Heckran Cave

The party comes out of a cupboard. One of the little dudes tells you that there is a house near the mountains to the west. Don't buy anything in this village at the market cause the prices are incredibly high. For kicks, visit the town center. You should head to Melchior's house where you can buy some cool weapons. After talking with him, go to the cave in the north.

In this cave, the monsters here are only afraid of magic. After saving at the save spot, you'll enter the room with the boss Heckran. If it says something like "Eat me" or "Hit Me" or something, don't attack it cause it'll counterattack. Before it dies, you learn that Lavos was born 400 years ago via Magus.

Continue northward until you find a whirlpool. Jump in and you end up near Lucca's house. Go visit Crono's house and the market at Truce. When you're done, head to the fair and go to 600 AD.

600 AD — The Search for Frog

Zenan Bridge

At Zenan Bridge, the bridge is fixed and the soldiers are hungry. Go to Guardia Castle to get supplies from the chef, then return to the bridge. After giving the food, the army's defenses collapse and you get to go through. You'll meet Ozzie and you have to beat two of his armies. At the end of the bridge, he'll create a boss Zombor. It has two parts: The top is weak against Ice, the bottom against Fire.

Dorino and Porre

Passing the bridge, you'll see two villages: Dorino and Porre. Visit each town and gear up. In the town of Dorino, there's a guy who wants the Naga-ette Bromide you got from the cathedral. He first talks about the king being injured but if you talk to him again, he'll see that you have it. In Porre, you learn a lot about the supposed hero. Enter the Cursed Woods and in the back, behind the moving bush, you'll find Frog. He tells you that he's not a hero and that no one can reforge the Masamune. When you revisit Dorino, you find out that the Masamune lies on the Denadoro Mountains.

The Denadoro Mountains

The party finds a kid with a sword and armor running into the mountain. This kid is the hero everyone is talking about. This area is long but easy if you have Lucca, especially her Fire tech. At the top, be sure to cross the water but not go down the waterfalls. On the other side, you will eventually find: A tab, a save spot, and a cave opening. Inside, you'll meet a little dude and he asks you if you came for the Masamune. Of course, you choose yes and his kid brother Masa comes out. Together, they're a threat. To handle the two of them, put one asleep (Lucca's Hypno Wave) and pound the other. When the two team up, it's gonna be hard but keep trying, you'll get them. When you beat Masa & Mune, you will receive the broken blade (them). Mune offers to carry you off to the bottom of the mountain.

Go to Tata's (The hero) house and talk to Tata. He'll tell you that he found the Hero Medal and everyone thought he was the hero. He'll give it to you. Then you should return to Frog and show him the Hero's Medal. He still won't join you but he'll move out of the way of the second treasure chest. In it is the second half of the Masamune. Inscribed on the hilt is the name Melchior.

The Quest to Reforge the Masamune

The party goes to Melchior's House near Medina Village (1000 AD). He tells you that he could reforge the sword but he needs some Dreamstone, a stone only found a long time ago. Your next destination is the Mystic Mountains, 65 Million BC. When the party comes out of the gate and into 65 Million BC, they are greeted by lots of Reptites. Fight them. Another batch arrives but a woman lightens your load. Beat them, and she will return. Her name is Ayla and she invites you to her village, Ioka Village, for a party.

At some point during the party, talk to Ayla about the red stone. She tells you that she has it and that you have to beat her in a drinking contest to get it (Rapid controller time). It's not that hard but I've never lost. I guess if you lose, you could try again. After that, the people sleep. When they wake up, the party finds the Gate Key missing. You should talk to Ayla, the chief, and she will join you to look for it.

Go into the Forest Maze and you'll see Kino there. Kino tells you that he took Crono's stuff cause he was jealous. When Ayla straightens things out, Kino tells them that the Reptites took it from him. Go into the forest and find your way out. You'll end up inside the circled forest. In the center is a cave. Crono's Lightning is important since many prehistoric creatures hate it.

When you fight the boss Nizbel, use Lightning on him first or his defense will be overwhelming. Check your HP cause when he releases that Lightning, it's gonna hurt. After you beat him, go back to 1000 AD and return to Melchior's Hut. Melchior and one other person will work on restoring the Masamune. Take the sword back to Frog in 600 AD.

Frog, surprised to see the Masamune, asks you to stay overnight. He dreams about the time when he was young. His real name is Glenn. Cyrus was the original owner of the Masamune. He obtained the Hero Medal from some monsters in Guardia Forest. When he fought Magus and Ozzie, the Masamune was broken and Cyrus was defeated. Magus then turns Glenn into a frog.

In the morning, Frog tells you he'll join you. Before going to the Magic Cave, it's a good idea to go back to the End of Time so Spekkio gives him the magic of Water. Return to 600 AD and buy as much stuff as you can. Go to the Magic Cave. Frog will use his sword to open the mouth of the cave and after going through it, you'll end up outside Magus's Castle.

600 AD — Magus's Castle

Magus's Castle

There are two wings to this castle. Explore the two wings and then return to the middle. A save point is there. When you step on it, Ozzie appears. He tells you that you have to beat all 100 monsters (No you don't). Now, there's a boss on both wings. I suggest going left first. On the left, you'll find Slash. Here are his stages:

  1. Normal mode.
  2. Pulls his sword from the wall. Do not use Magic.
  3. Counterattack every time. Frog must be kept on Heal.

After beating him, a save spot will appear. Save there.

On the right wing, you'll find Flea. He/She is hard cause she keeps using Confuse, Poison, etc. When you beat him/her, you should go back and save. In the middle, the save spot reappears. You step on it and you teleport to the center hallway. You chase Ozzie down the hallway and eventually catch him. He'll cast an impenetrable shell. To beat him, hit the chains around him. After all four have been hit, the floor under Ozzie collapses and he falls in. Save on the right, teleport on the left.

You meet Magus in the dark room. He's in the middle of casting something when you interrupt him. He says "The black wind is weeping." This guy is tough. Use the Masamune to lower his defense and change his barrier. You can tell what magic to use against him according to the one he used on you. If he used Shadow, use the Delta attacks to hit him. Check your HP cause his attacks are strong. I think Dark Matter hits for 250 HP each.

After defeating him, a large disturbance forms. It's a time gate. Everyone is sucked into it. The screen blackens, then the game seems to start over… Crono is awakened by Marle. She tells him to get up and find a job. He doesn't get up, the dream ends weirdly… Ayla wakes the party up. You're back in 65 Million BC.

65 Million BC — The Tyrano's Lair

After the Gate

You rest in the hut you're in and find out that the northern village of Laruba has been burned down. You go down to investigate. Ayla gets chewed out by the locals but still continues to search for the kidnapped villagers. She obtains permission to use the Dactyls. Go to the Dactyl Nest and meet Ayla. You ride the Dactyls to the Tyrano's Lair.

The Prehistoric Castle

There are two entrances at the beginning. One is open, one is closed. Go to the open one and free the villagers and Kino. Kino will show you how to open the other door. Continue through the castle, remembering the monsters hate Lightning. At the end of the castle, bring Lucca into the party if she's not cause her Fire magic is useful. You'll meet Azala again and this time he's got a new pet, the Black Tyrano. Concentrate on Azala first. When the monster removes his own defense, that's when you'll pound him with everything.

After the battle, the red star in the sky begins to fall. Ayla tells you that it's Lavos. The Dactyls arrive via Kino and everyone escapes except for Azala, who stays. The meteor destroys the castle, creating a huge crater. You enter the crater, hoping to find Lavos. Instead, there's a time gate. You go in and end up in 12,000 BC.

12000 BC — The Magic Kingdom

Enhasa

Once you leave the cave, you'll find yourself in the Ice Age. To the left is a cave that you can't enter right now. To the right is a big igloo. That's a Skyway that leads up. You find the first city of Enhasa. There, open the elemental books in this order: Water, Wind, Fire. A secret door opens. If you have the power, beat the Nu's inside. You'll get some cool stuff. Also inside, you meet a strange kid who says "The black wind begins to howl, one of you is about to perish…"

Kajar

At the second city of Kajar, do the same thing with the books. You'll find a Black Rock in the secret room.

Zeal Palace

At Zeal Palace, scratch the Nu's back. There are three chambers. First, go to the right one. In it is the bedroom of the little kid Janus and his big sister Schala. Schala has to go see her mother and Janus ignores you. Follow Schala into the center chamber. She activates the door with her pendant but yours doesn't work. Go to the left chamber and charge it in the Mammon Machine. You can now open the doors. Inside, you see the queen, the prophet, Schala, and Dalton the bodyguard.

Dalton releases a Golem to get you. Fighting him is hard and you don't have to win since the outcome's the same. If you win, you get cool experience though. Do not physically attack him, only magic. He copycat's everything you do.

You'll be jailed by Dalton and put inside the Mammon Machine. Schala saves you but the prophet makes her send you back through the time gate, then seals it shut. When you return to 65 Million BC, the party remembers that there were several doors and boxes with the same crest that were unopenable before. Many are in 2300 AD.

2300 AD — Break the Seal!

The Sewers and Keeper's Dome

Before getting to the Keeper's Dome, you have to pass an underground sewer system (the one you ignored earlier near the western entrance of Lab 32). In the sewers, the tadpoles will indirectly guide you through it. Any sound caused by you (making contact with anything except treasure boxes) will awaken enemies. The boss here is one of the easier ones to defeat. After making your way out, you'll see the Keeper's Dome and Death Peak.

Previously, Belthasar lived there and was working on a secret machine, but he's dead now. You find a Nu but he ignores you. Break the seal on the door in the back and go in. In the room, you will receive several (unavoidable) messages from Belthasar. Making your way through, you find another door with a seal. Open it and go in. Inside is a huge ship. You cannot find a way in so just leave. Right before you reach the door, the Nu comes in and tells you that he's Belthasar! Belthasar programmed the Nu to instruct you on how to use the time machine. He asks you to name it (I'll refer to it as Epoch) and then you take off.

You now can go to any time period, including 1999 AD, the Day of Lavos. Since none of the other time periods yield anything important, and since you can't maneuver, you should go back to the time you were kicked out of, 12,000 BC.

12000 BC — The Guru of Life

Terra Cave

Getting back to 12,000 BC, you find that the ladder in Terra Cave is fixed. Continue upward and enter. People say that there is a way to the Mountain of Woe in the cave (Remember? Where the Guru of Life was imprisoned), but it's full of rhinos. Be sure to stop by the FREE inn and then save at the bottom of the cave. A lot of the weapons here are cool to the first time players so spend and save (SPAVE!).

Inside, make note of the tab in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. These rhinos have 1000 HP each and their attack power raises with each attack against them, so concentrate on one first. At the end of the cave, you'll find two colored (Elemental) rhinos and an Imp controlling them. Concentrate on the rhinos first, one by one, then pound the Imp. The Imp is hard to beat cause he keeps healing himself but he'll eventually run out of MP or you get him first.

Mountain of Woe

After that, go back and save, then climb the chain. At the mountain, fighting the Rubble will get you LOTS of tech experience but you can't use it against them. Beware of the Gargoyles because they can knock you down to 1 HP. At the end, there is a big boss, Giga Gaia. He's pretty fast so Marle's Haste is very helpful here. Defeat the two hands first, then the main body. After you kill him, Balthasar comes out of the block of ice. The mountain chain begins to crumble and falls from the sky.

At Terra Cave, Balthasar tells you that the queen plans to bring the Mammon Machine to the Ocean Palace and revive Lavos. Schala comes in and urges you to stop her mother. Dalton comes in and kidnaps her. Balthasar gives you a Red Knife that can stop Lavos from reviving. Your next stop is Zeal Palace.

12000 BC — The Ocean Palace

The Under-Water Palace

In the center hallway of Zeal Palace, you'll have to fight Dalton. After some time, he'll leave the chamber. It's a long way to the end of the Palace so switch members often to level them up. Before leaving the temple (before the save spot at the bottom), be sure to get Crono's Luminare tech. If you don't, just go up and down until you gain enough experience to get it. This will also better prepare you in levels for the bosses ahead of you. At the end of the palace, you'll find the Golem Twins. They act just like the Golem, except that Crono's Luminare causes massive damage while they only do lightning. Use the other two members to maintain your HP.

The party continues and finds the queen, the prophet, and Schala there next to the Mammon Machine. You try to use the Red Knife, but it alone cannot stop the fury of Lavos. It gets charged and becomes the Masamune but it's worthless cause you've been teleported to another dimension. You're there alone with Lavos. His opening attack causes near or fatal damage (Unless this isn't your first game). When it seems all hope is lost and your party is down, the prophet appears and takes off his hood. The prophet was Magus all along. He tries to attack Lavos but Lavos sucks his power away. His attack fails and he is also knocked down.

Crono gets up and uses his remaining power to help the others escape. Everyone ends up in the Ocean Palace except for Crono, who sacrificed himself to save the others. Schala uses the rest of her pendant's power to help the others leave the Ocean Palace. Lavos wakes up, his energy is massive, and the Sky City is destroyed. There is a tidal wave and most of the continent below is engulfed. The remainder of the party wakes up in the only surviving village. They go to the Commons to find Crono. In there, you'll meet Dalton, who proclaims himself the next king and captures you.

The Blackbird

Escape from the Blackbird

You wake up to find yourself robbed and stuck in a cell. You go outside and find yourself on the Blackbird. When you go back in, you find a ventilation system that you could crawl through. If you have Ayla in your party, then just go outside and beat everyone up, finding your stuff. If not, there's a room somewhere via the ventilation system (You have to go even if you have Ayla) where a guard is asleep and you could get the stuff for one character. In your journey, you find that Dalton stole your Epoch and is modifying it. After getting everything, find your way out via a room and you'll find turrets lined along the wing. Just like the Rubble, these give plenty of tech points but hurt too so it's your choice. At the edge of the wing is the Golem Boss. He's pretty tough. If you don't kick his butt, he'll just run away cause he's afraid of heights.

Dalton finishes adding wings to the Epoch and takes off. You jump onto the machine and kick his butt. You get control of the Epoch but cause Dalton modifies the controls, you accidentally fire at the Blackbird. It falls to the ground and you land next to the Last Village. In the Commons, you find out that someone's looking for someone at the North Cape. You walk up there and find Magus. He tells you of his past: After you left the Ocean Palace, the Gurus are gathered up. Lavos is revived by the queen and his force creates gates that suck each Guru in. Janus (The kid, Magus too) comes in at the wrong time and gets sucked in too. He arrives in 600 AD and is welcomed by Ozzie and a bunch of monsters.

After you tell him your story, you have a choice to fight him or not. If you do, you'll beat him up (Or Frog alone, depending on your party) and he'll tell you that if you kill him, the curse on Frog is lifted. If you don't, he'll join your party. When you go back to the Epoch, you'll find that the Ocean Palace floats above the ocean, and it's calling you. A good idea is to steer clear right now. You'll have your chance, but it's not now.

Non-Linear Side Quests

From now on, you can go straight to Lavos and beat the game or do one or all of the things below. You can do them in any order and it doesn't matter. Have fun, explore. You can go anywhere, anytime.

1. Save Crono!

Go to the End of Time and talk to the Old Man. He'll tell you that there's a way to save Crono. He gives you the Chrono Trigger and tells you to talk to the creator of it (The Guru of Time) at 2300 AD. There, the Nu tells you that you have to get a clone of Crono (If you hadn't already). You go back to 1000 AD and go to Bekkler's House of Horrors. You can win a clone of Crono if you play his 40 silver point game. After you win, go back to 2300 AD. The Guru of Time then tells you to proceed to Death Peak with the aid of three dolls. Bring Marle (Optional).

The first doll tells you to hide behind trees when the wind picks up. That's easy. You'll eventually meet your first Lavos Spawn. He's pretty easy if you only concentrate on his head. Any hits on his back will cause all heck to break loose. The second doll tells you that the bridge to the left of him is very slippery. This part's a pain in the butt. You meet your second Lavos Spawn. The third doll tells you to push the shell. What shell? You'll find out when you beat the third and final Lavos Spawn. Push the shell next to the broken ladder. Climb up it and you'll eventually reach a tree at the top. The Chrono Trigger will bring them to the exact moment when Crono's getting fried by Lavos. You replace Crono with the clone. You did it!

2. Cyrus's Tomb (Frog must be in the party)

When you talk to Frog at the End of Time, he'll tell you where the tomb is. Go to the tomb in 600 AD (1000 AD and you'll get fried by Cyrus) and you'll find that the place is trashed. Go to the town to the south and there's a guy in the Cafe that can repair it, but he doesn't have any tools. Go to the same place in 1000 AD and ask his descendant for his tools. Get it from his house and return to 600 AD. He goes to his house and gathers his team, then goes to the ruins.

He'll repair parts of the castle, but not all because there are ghosts in there. Beat them and explore as much as you can. You have to do this a few times but eventually you can explore the whole place. When you find Cyrus's tomb, a tearful moment will upgrade the Masamune. Also inside is the best weapon for Marle (600 AD — Siren [Random Stop] / 1000 AD — Valkyere [Which is the strongest]).

3. Rainbow Shell (Marle must be in the party in the second half)

Toma tells you in 1000 AD (If you fulfill his wish) that the Rainbow Shell is on a tiny island in 600 AD. The island, which is called the Giant's Claw, is actually the Tyrano's Lair from 65 Million BC. After beating up your old friend, you'll get the Rainbow Shell. It's too heavy to carry (Even with Magus in your party!) so you ask King Guardia (Whatever number) to keep it for you until 1000 AD.

Now, Marle should definitely be in the party. You go back to 1000 AD to retrieve the shell. At Guardia Castle, you find out that the king is being tried for selling off the Rainbow Shell, which he didn't do. You go in the courtroom but is kicked out by the chancellor. There is a new wing in the castle that you should explore. Inside, you'll find out that it's all a plot set up by the chancellor. You get a piece of the Rainbow Shell and return to the courtroom. There, you prove Marle's father's innocence but you find out something else. The chancellor becomes Yakra XIII and he fights you.

After you beat him, Balthasar shows up. Return to the Rainbow Shell and you'll find Balthasar there. He gives you a choice between three helmets (That has defense +9 and prevents all nasty status) or one dress (That has a huge defense rating and cuts magic damage by 1/3). Come back if you get the Sun Stone.

4. Ozzie's Fort (Magus in party optional)

When you talk to Magus at the End of Time, he'll show you a place in 600 AD where Ozzie lives. Go there and you'll find him. Like your previous encounters, he'll run. You beat up your old friends Slash and Flea. Don't grab the stuff under the guillotine cause it'll hurt but in the same room is the best gear for Magus (If you have him). Where is it? Notice that this is the only room shaped the way it is. At the end, you'll find Ozzie and friends. If you have Ayla, you can steal their secret weapons. When you attack, concentrate, one-by-one, on Slash and Flea. When you beat them, Ozzie will run again. In his room, he will put himself in an impenetrable block of ice again. When you hit the switch, you will fall into his trap door. Go back and fight him again. A cat comes in and hits the right switch and Ozzie's gone forever.

5. The Forest That Wasn't There (Magus, Frog, and Marle recommended)

At 12,000 BC, find the woman (If you hadn't already) that asks if she should keep a seedling given to her by the Guru of Life. Say yes.

Go back to 600 AD and to the desert. Go into Fiona's Villa. Fiona tells you that there are monsters underneath the desert that is killing all the life there. You should go down the whirlpool (With Magus, Frog, and Marle [Water magic]) and kill all the monsters and get cool stuff. The boss Retinite is quite hard. Use Water/Ice magic to harden the sand, then attack him.

When you go back to Fiona's Villa, make sure Robo comes along. Inside, Robo offers to help her revive the forest. Leave him there and return to 1000 AD to pick him up. They camp out in the forest and talk about the point of their adventure. After everyone falls asleep, Lucca gets up and walks out. She finds a red gate and goes in. She warps back to 990 AD at a tragic point in her life. She goes outside and finds her mom and herself (as a kid). Her mom tries to clean one of her dad's inventions and is stuck. You need to enter the password to stop it. If you do, it's L A R A, you save her. If not, she's a crip. Your choice. Does nothing for the rest of the game.

When you return, Robo gives her (you) a ring that is a one-time reanimate (I haven't used it yet so I don't really know what it does).

6. Robo's Birthplace — Geno Dome (Robo in your party)

If you talk to Robo at the End of Time, he'll tell you where he was made. Entering the factory (Geno Dome), the computer says hi and calls Robo some P name (like Prometheus). Robo tells you to follow him. Now here's a note: When he tells you to follow him, that means make him the leader (duh!).

Inside, you have to find the two dolls and place them in their appropriate places next to the closed door. Follow the directions of one of the computers to get through. The main computer will continue to give twisted logic to you as you advance. Sooner or later, you'll meet Atropos XR. She's been reprogrammed by the main computer. Robo fights her one-on-one and when he wins, she gives a very useful ribbon to Robo.

The main computer Mother Brain is accompanied by three others that give her life. Destroy these first (Luminare?), then hit the main computer. Use your strongest stuff and beat her in a hurry cause she adapts (don't computers?) and gets tougher. You'll receive two arms for Robo when you beat her. One has the strongest attack power and one has the lowest. The lowest, the Crisis Arm, is actually the strongest when Robo is at 10 HP or below. If you have the chance, use it. It's godly baby!

7. The Sun Stone (Lucca in your party)

When you talk to Lucca at the End of Time, she tells you about a stone of enormous power. Before you go get it at 2300 AD, go to 65 Million BC and get three or more Ruby Armors and equip them. Subtract one for each Red Mail or Vest you have and equip those instead. Go to the Sun Palace at 2300 AD. You'll face the Son of Sun and he's tough. You can only hit the little flames around him. If you guess the right one, you hit the boss. If you're wrong, here comes Flare (Why you got the armor). After beating him, the boss becomes the Moon Stone (The Sun Stone drained of power). Take it to the Sun Keep at 65 Million BC and leave it there.

Go to 1000 AD to check up on it. You'll find it's stolen. There's a house that glows. Go there and try to get it back but the thief denies ever seeing it. If you remember, a lady in the same house in 600 AD wanted Jerky. In the same town, the bartender at the Cafe sells you a Jerky for a high price. Go back to 600 AD and GIVE it to her. She'll teach her kids to not steal and to give. At 1000 AD, they'll just give you the stone back. Put it back in the Sun Keep and retrieve it at 2300 AD.

Lucca makes her best (and worst) weapon out of it called the Wonder Shot. Her dad makes the Sun Specs. Take it to Balthasar at Guardia Castle and he'll make the Prism Specs and the Rainbow (70% Critical Hit Rate). Both should be equipped on Crono.

Monster Treasure Chart — Credits

Thanks for downloading the Chrono Trigger Monster Treasure Chart! I'm glad that my Monster Treasure Chart is finally complete! I had to play the game from the beginning to the end again to get the names of all the monsters and it's treasures that I'd missed. This is one of my greatest work I ever done yet, with some help from other Chrono Trigger fans. Please DO distribute my work to everyone as long as you DO NOT change the contents of this work, DO NOT charge anyone for it and give credit to me and everyone who helped me with this MTC. Please freely use this chart in your FAQ or whatever as long as you have my permission. Happy Treasure Hunting!

XI. Game Genie Codes

(First introduced by Lord Rokol. Various authors credited below.)

Codes by LuKaS X

9DAB-7765 Infinite MP Lucca
3BC4-7765 Fleeing Enemies
-This will make most moving monsters in battle try to run
away from you during battle. This code will not work on
stationary monsters and bosses. Some monsters will still
fight you if you attack them while they're trying to run
away. Some monsters will glitch the game, like Winged Apes.
DCF3-7765 Disappear
-Makes you and your enemies just disappear in battle. The
battle still goes on, you just can't see anything.
-Changing the first and second characters will change
                colors, characters, etc.
-Replacing the first two characters with these will do weird
                things:
                        BB 44 33 6B
77 - It's sorta faded and will either reset your
game, freeze, and/or give your characters weird
                        stats.
568F-7765 Weird Items
-It's hard to explain, but if you go into battle and try to
use a Tech against monsters, a message appears saying you
received something. Then, all the monsters are instantly
destroyed (can freeze game, rarely) and you're stuck in
eternal battle. You can run away in most places, if not,
                just replace the game.
-After careful experimenting, I have concluded that you are
                actually getting Techs.
-This is a good start for an item code.
B323-7765 Invincibility
-This will make you and your enemies invincible in battles.
                -B322-7765
                        -It makes damages increase.
B623-7765 9999 Damage
-Anything that causes harm will inflict 9999 damage.
                -This means EVERYONE so beware.
-A Haste Helm and Crono's Confuse deals 4x9999 damage.
B625-7765 Evade Increases
-This code increases the Evade rating for everyone. The
chances of getting hit is 1 in 10! This does not affect
                Techs though.
812C-7765 Instant Victory
-The moment you try to do anything in battle, you start
doing your victory dance...and it causes a BLACK OUT!
0E6F-7767 Walk through walls (Up Only)
EE6F-E767 Walk through walls (Left Only)
-These two codes allow you to walk in that direction
anywhere. If you get stuck, there's a chance you're stuck
for good. These codes work in all areas!
39B0-EFA4 Walk through walls (Revised)
-Walk through walls almost anywhere on the screen. May not
work in some areas. Unlike the previous codes, this will
only allow you to access areas that are accessible.
-You can skip half the game by going straight through to
the Keeper's Dome and getting the Epoch before getting Robo!
3CB5-5FD3 Silver Pendulum at the title screen.
DEC0-5767 Moving characters act strange
-The movement of some characters are strange, may cause
                glitches.
DCCB-57FE Strange Music and Sound FX
00C0-57FE More strange music and Sound FX
0082-E707 Play Jet-Bike race at the title screen
FF34-5F0D Less characters in battle (Some disappear)
4282-E707 Time warp graphics at the title screen
5DE6-ED67 Earthquakes!
333B-EF00 Skips Exp. and GP screen after battles
F76E-5F00 Characters automatically run away
-Characters automatically run away from battle. You can
even run away from bosses. One negative thing is that it
only seems to work if you start a new game or new game+.
7F67-5DD0 Beat monsters (Even bosses)
-Go into battle with the GG on. Notice that the HP numbers
of your characters will be messed up and the game will act
like it froze. Now turn the GG off and your party members
will fall down as if they died. The enemies will disappear
and everyone will get back up! Then the game keeps on
going as if you beat them. Works on bosses too! It
should be called the "Playing dead" code.
EE34-5D60 Attacks do more damage in battle
                -Doesn't increase magical attack damage.
A06E-7D07 Save game on Level 0
-Save a game on level 0. Instead of getting the normal
saved game screen, you will get one from the menu. Choose
a slot and save. Reset the game without the code. Use the
New Game+ on that save and Crono will start out with 0 of
                almost everything.
22B4-546B Get the bad ending
Leave the GG off until you enter a building at Truce 1000
A.D. Turn on the GG and leave the building. You will get
the map screen. Turn off the GG and get the bad ending.
44E4-5F0D Strange FX
Saved game screen, controls, and battles all messed up.
7FC3-EDDD Major Glitch!
Major glitches when you enter an area.
3B65-54D8 Invisible characters in the Map Screen
DE6F-776B Major glitches on the Map Screen
4444-54D8 Yellow text on Map
22EC-ED60 Gain all techs after one battle
-After a battle, it says you get a lot of Exp. What you
really get is all your techs.
44E2-5F0D Does strange stuff, especially during battle

Codes by Pheonix573

-For the first few rounds of battle, the damage that is
dealt to you increasingly goes down then later begins to
                rise again.
DBF3-7765 Strange battles
-You and your enemies turn into jumbo numbers and letters.
                -Techs do no damage.

XII. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are there any codes for this game?
A: Most likely yes. There are obviously Game Genie codes, but if you notice in the instruction booklet, a screen shot shows the Status Menu with Crono at level ** with nothing in his inventory. Could it be there's a code that raises you to level **?
Q: How do I kill Cyrus at the Northern Ruins?
A: Why would you want to? He's your friend. Actually, he's invincible — if you survive in the fight long enough, the characters will quit and say so. Do the Non-Linear Quest #2 to fix this situation.
Q: Why is there a Nu in the Cursed Woods?
A: It might be because it's there so you can build up experience. If you provoke a monster near him, you get to fight him. Nintendo says that the Nu took over the Cursed Woods when Frog left.
Q: Where are the rocks hidden and how do I use them?
A: Look at the list of Rocks (Section VIII) to see where the rocks are located. To use them, create the required party and equip one of them with the appropriate rock. They must have the listed spells to be able to use the rock. When you fight, it will be under the Triple Tech list.
Q: How do you get the New Game+ Option?
A: Look at the list of endings, Section X.
Q: Who is the person who Gaspar says is "close to you?"
A: He is referring to Queen Zeal. Put her out of her misery by kicking her butt in the Black Omen.
Q: Where is the Mop?
A: You can steal it from the Nu.
Q: Where is the MirageHand?
A: The MirageHand is located at Denadoro Mts. When you enter Denadoro Mts, go north but do not climb the ladder. Right of the ladder, there is another way at the north that leads to another area. In this next area, look left and you should see a treasure almost hidden by the leaves. You will find the MirageHand in the treasure.
Q: There is a weapon listed in the Item Chart called the Demon Hit — where is it located?
A: It's no mistake. The Demon Hit is located in the Ocean Palace. When you enter the Ocean Palace, go into the next room below and you'll be in an area where there's six doorways. Take the bottom left doorway. In that room, go past the doorway at the south but don't cross the lava to where those Red Scouts and Blue Scouts are. Instead, go left to the narrow strip of floor between the doorway and the lava. Keep going until there's no way you can go any further. Push the wall until you find a hidden passage. You should see a room with a treasure — inside the treasure contains the Demon Hit.
Q: Where are the Gloom Cape, Gloom Helm, and DoomSickle for Magus?
A: The Gloom Cape, Gloom Helm, and DoomSickle are located in Ozzie's Fort. At that room with a trap and a treasure that Ozzie wants you to get, walk south from the stairs that lead to the next floor. You will find a hidden room where those items are and a Magic Tab.
Q: I heard that you can upgrade some items — how do you upgrade them and which items can be upgraded?
A: There are some items you can level up. They are the Black, Blue, Red, and White Vests, Nova Armor, Kali Blade, and Siren. To upgrade them, go to the year 600 AD and press the A button on the sealed chests containing those objects. When it prompts you to remove the object from the chest, select "No". Then go to 1000 AD and open the same sealed chests. The item inside will level up. The Black, Blue, Red, and White Vests will turn into the corresponding Mail. The Nova Armor will turn into the Moon Armor. The Kali Blade will turn into the Shiva Edge, and the Siren will turn into the Valkerye. After that, you can go back to 600 AD and pick up the original items!
