Walkthrough forFinal Fantasy IV

Baron Castle — The Night Before the Journey

After the introductory scenario you can speak to Kain if you wish. Head down into the next room; on the right side is a door with a switch that opens a chamber with three treasure chests — one holds 480 Gil, another an Ether, and the third a Tent. Head to the left side and then proceed toward the stairs. In this room you will witness a brief scene with Rosa. Once outside, make for the tower on the upper left. Before you reach it, Cid, the Chief Engineer of Baron, stops Cecil for a conversation about the kingdom's history. You can explore the rest of the castle if you like, but the guards won't let you pass without the King's orders. A maid will be waiting at your room door with freshly made sheets; approach the bed and Cecil will rest for the night. During the night Rosa visits him, and come morning Cecil and Kain set out on their journey.

Town of Baron

Just outside the castle walls lies the Town of Baron. There isn't much to do here besides gathering information, but a few items are hidden about town. Check the pot to the left of the Inn for a Potion, and look in the water — the bridge is to the left of the dancer — for a Tent and a Copper Timer. The door on the left side of town and the doors to the Weapon and Armor shops are all locked for now. Stock up on supplies for the road ahead: two Tents and three Potions is a solid start, though the battles ahead aren't especially tough and you can always earn Gil from random encounters outside. If this is your first time playing an RPG, visit the training room to learn the basics. When you're ready, head north across the bridges until you see a cave.

Cave of Mist

Both Cecil and Kain start at level 10. Kain requires nearly double the experience Cecil does to gain a level — a quirk of his class. You can grind a few levels here by staying near the entrance and using a Tent to recover outside. If a battle turns dangerous, hold L + R to attempt escape.

The cave is filled with a pale, ghostly mist that gives it an eerie atmosphere. Collect the treasures scattered within: two Potions, an Eyedrop, and a Tent. As you push deeper, a mysterious voice repeatedly warns you to turn back. Ignore it and keep moving. Near the exit the voice speaks one final time and asks if you wish to leave. Choose "Yes" to trigger the boss fight.

Boss Fight: Mist Dragon

HP: 400 — Gil: 200 — EXP: 700

Have Cecil attack with regular strikes and have Kain use Jump. When the Mist Dragon dissolves into mist, stop all attacks immediately — striking it in that form triggers a devastating counterattack. Select Defense or use Potions while it is incorporeal, then resume the assault once it reforms. Repeat until it falls. Cecil should gain at least one level; don't be surprised if Kain doesn't. When the fight is over, exit the cave, save, and de-equip Kain before entering the Town of Mist.

Town of Mist

The Package Reveals Itself

A lengthy cutscene plays out here. When a fight occurs during it, don't waste any items — you are meant to lose this battle. Afterward, you'll find the mountain pass back to Baron has caved in behind you, cutting off retreat.

Kaipo — The Desert Town

After the scenario, travel south across the desert to the oasis town of Kaipo. Head to the Inn to trigger the next scene.

Boss Fight: General and Three Baron Soldiers

HP: 27 (BaronSoldiers), 221 (General) — Gil: 162–242 — EXP: 471–869

This is an easy fight. Focus your attacks on the Baron Soldiers first — if you clear them, the General retreats. If you manage to defeat the General as well, you receive a significantly larger EXP reward.

Rydia joins the party at level 1 with minimal HP and MP. She doesn't know any offensive magic yet, but will learn basic Black magic after gaining a level or two. Head to the northeast part of Kaipo to find Rosa in a house, bedridden with a terrible fever. The only cure is the Desert Light, hidden in the Antlion's cave. Before leaving, visit the weapon shop and buy Rydia a Bow and about 25 Iron Arrows. She's already wearing the best armor the shop sells, though you may pick up an extra Leather Helm if you wish. Check a pot near the right side of town for an Ether. When ready, head northeast to the cave entrance and save your game.

Underground Waterway — Search for the Desert Light

Enter the cave and head up to claim two chests: a MaidKiss and a Potion. Take the left path to a bridge where you'll find an old man — Tellah, the sage. Pick up the Tent from the chest below before speaking with him. Tellah's stats surpass Cecil's at this point, and his knowledge of both Black and White magic makes him an invaluable support, though most of his stronger spells have faded from memory. He starts at level 20 with roughly 340 HP, though his MP will not grow as he levels. Continue on and collect the chest to the right for a Fragment, then wade into the water (it's harmless) for an IronRing — equip it on Tellah. In the next room wade again to grab another Potion, then take the ladder below.

To the left of the subsequent room is an Ether. Press onward to the next chamber, where Tellah conjures a Tent, saving yours. After a quiet scene between Cecil and Tellah as Rydia sleeps, you'll have a chance to save. Proceed and grab the IceRod chest to the right, then collect 580 Gil and a Fragment from the two chests to the south. Head left through the door; in the next room pick up the Potion, then walk left through the wall just before the northern door to enter a secret passage leading to a chest with a Feather Hat. Return and go through the door.

Boss Fight: Octomamm

HP: 2350 — Gil: 500 — EXP: 1200

In the room before the boss there are four chests: an Ether, an S.Pole, a Copper Timer, and the Shadow Sword — equip the sword on Cecil. After descending the waterfall you'll find the Hades Helm and Hades Gauntlet; backtrack to grab the Hades Armor and a Hermes from behind the door. Equip the armor on Cecil, then approach the tentacles in the water to begin the fight.

Though the Octomamm has eight parts, he counts as a single target. He attacks quickly at first but slows as you damage him. Have Rydia cast Chocb, have Tellah unleash Thund, and let Cecil hammer with physical strikes — each hit should deal roughly 130 HP of damage. Each leg that falls is progress; when Tellah remarks that the monster has slowed, victory is near. Save after the fight, but don't bother wasting a Tent.

Damcyan Castle

Unexpected Surprise by the Red Wings

Before reaching Damcyan, the Red Wings streak overhead and bombard the castle into rubble. Enter the ruined fortress and head back down one step onto the sand, then follow the walls right to a door. Inside, a dead guard will vanish when spoken to; step past him and hit the switch to reveal an invisible path leading to a Crossbow, a Feather Hat, and a RubyRing. Return and take the staircase to a second treasure room — check the pots for 30 Holy Arrows and 10 Iron Arrows, and collect all the chests for an Antidote, Potion, Eyedrop, Gold-Pin, FenixDown, and Ether.

Back at the main entrance, de-equip Tellah before pressing further into the castle. On your way through you'll pass a room of mostly-opened chests; the one at the top holds a Tent. At the heart of Damcyan a long, emotional cutscene unfolds. Edward — Prince of Damcyan — joins the party, grief-stricken but determined. Once the scene ends you can return to the castle interior; a pot on the left will fully restore your party's HP and cure status effects, while the pot to its left fully restores MP. When you're done, board the Hovercraft.

Antlion's Cave

From Damcyan, go northeast through the shallow rocks. Save before entering the cave — enemies here are strong. Collect the six chests scattered about: a Potion and SpiderWeb on the left, a Gold-Pin and Potion on the right, a Tent and Potion at the lower left. Head to the lower right for an S.Pole chest, and find Edward's strongest harp, the Lamia Harp, behind a nearby door — equip it immediately, as it doubles his attack power. A chest above the next door holds a Copper Timer. Inside that door is a save room with a FenixDown, Ether, and ExitDoor. Save and heal, then head left to collect a SpiderWeb and proceed to the Antlion's nest.

Boss Fight: Antlion

HP: 1100 — Gil: 800 — EXP: 1500

The Antlion's normal hits only deal 1 HP of damage, but every physical attack you land triggers a counter-hit of roughly 21 HP — dangerous for Rydia and Edward, who has only 60 HP at level 5. Have Cecil attack freely, Rydia cast Chocb, and let Edward act as healer. Use Potions when HP drops below 40. Persistence wins this one and nets you the Desert Light.

Return to Kaipo

With the Hovercraft, return to Kaipo by heading west along the shallow rocks. In Rosa's room, open the item menu over her and use the Desert Light. She wakes, a scene plays out — and then a surprise visitor attacks.

Boss Fight: Sahagin

HP: 45,672 — Gil: 100 — EXP: 800

You basically cannot lose this fight. The numbers are intimidating but the danger is not.

Rosa joins at level 10 with 150 HP. Keep her in the back row. Before leaving, stock up on Arrows for both Rosa and Rydia. Then head back northeast to Mt. Hobs via the Hovercraft.

Mt. Hobs

After a brief scene, press into the mountain. Take the first door you see to find a save point and four chests — a Tent, Potion, Gold-Pin, and 960 Gil. Save, heal, and continue right. Don't miss the view of the valley below despite the 16-bit graphics. Near the summit, open the chest for 10 Holy Arrows. Just ahead, a Karate Master is set upon by monsters and dispatches them easily — but then the MomBomb looms, and your party leaps in to help.

Boss Fight: MomBomb

HP: 11,000 (before explosion) — Gil: 543–1,200 — EXP: 1,200–2,415

Five against one sounds favorable but this fight is genuinely tough. Have Rydia cast Chocb, Cecil attack physically, Rosa use her Aim command, Yang strike normally (not Kick yet), and Edward split healer and attacker duties. After roughly 1,500 HP of damage the MomBomb changes form — keep attacking, and heal any character who falls below 75 HP. When the bomb gives its warning that it's about to explode, heal immediately; the explosion deals around 50–60 HP to every character. The MomBomb then splits into three Bombs and three Pain Bombs — six smaller targets. Switch Yang to Kick to hit them all at once; continue your usual pattern to mop up.

Yang joins the party permanently after the scene. Continue east down the mountain — no treasure chests along the way — past the mountains to the Castle of Fabul. Save and use a Tent just outside the castle gates before entering.

Fabul

Preparing to Defend the Castle

The Weapon and Armor shops are on the right and left just inside the entrance. Buy Yang an extra claw, and equip Cecil with all available Demon Armor, helmet, and gloves. Sell any Black or Hades equipment you no longer need. Explore the two Fabul towers on the second floor south: the left tower holds a Fragment, S.Pole, and Potion, with a ZeusRage hidden in one of the upper-right pots. The right tower's second floor has a Beserk Potion in a pot, and a Tent in the chest on the upper floor. Return to the central building and head up.

De-equip Rosa before speaking to the King. He asks if you're ready to defend the castle — choose "No" if you need more preparation time, "Yes" to begin immediately. Cecil, Yang, and Edward hold the entrance while Rosa and Rydia tend to the wounded. Battles are continuous with no rest between them; rely on Edward's Heal ability to stay topped up.

The Defense of Fabul

Fight One: Captain (HP: 320) and two Baron Marines (HP: 65 each) — Gil: 352, EXP: 1,378 with Captain.

Fight Two: Lacy (HP: 130), Sahagin (HP: 64), Domo Boy (HP: 37) — Gil: 128, EXP: 427.

Fight Three: Captain and two Baron Marines — same stats as Fight One.

Fight Four: Gargoyle (HP: 160) — Gil: 90, EXP: 315.

Fight Five: Lacy, Sahagin, Domo Boy — same as Fight Two.

Fight Six: Captain and two Baron Marines — same as Fights One and Three.

Fight Seven: Dragon Knight (HP: 65,000) — Don't try to win this one.

After the scenario re-enters the throne room. Press the switch on the right to open a door; follow the secret passage to three chests holding a SpiderWeb, an Ether, and the Demon Shield. Check the pot on the left of the throne room for a Hermes. Rest at the Inn, then after a conversation you'll receive the Death Sword. Equip the sword and Demon Shield on Cecil. De-equip everyone besides Cecil before boarding at the docks to the east.

Mysidia

The townsfolk here will turn you into a Pig or Toad if you speak carelessly — if it happens, talk to the same person again to be restored. Head to the center of town to meet the Elder of Mysidia. After the scene, visit the shops: buy Porom about 60 Holy Arrows and purchase Palom a FlameRod. Outfit both twins with all the Gaea/Triangle equipment you can afford. Porom starts at level 10 with 110 HP and Palom at level 10 with 100 HP — consider gaining a few levels before the trek east to Mt. Ordeals.

Mt. Ordeals

After the opening scene, pick up two Potions as you climb. Monsters here are undead, so Holy Arrows and Fire magic are your best tools — keep your MP supplied. On the third screen you encounter Tellah again, who rejoins the party. In the next area grab two Ethers. Reach the summit save point, heal fully, and press on to the bridge.

Boss Fight: Scarmiglione and Four Skullnants (Round 1)

HP: 3,500 (Scarmiglione), 200 (Revenant) — Gil: 2,400 — EXP: 3,400

Have Palom cast Fire2 on everything — he must be at least level 12 to have learned it — and Tellah cast Fire. Keep Cecil pounding Scarmiglione and let Porom handle healing. Keep the twins above 50 HP and Cecil and Tellah above 100 HP; Scarmiglione's repeated Thund casts can shred a weakened party.

After the fight, retreat to the save point to heal and save rather than pressing forward immediately. Swap the row positions — put Cecil in the back and Palom, Porom, and Tellah in the front. This matters because Scarmiglione attacks again from behind.

Boss Fight: Scarmiglione (Round 2)

HP: 3,523 — Gil: 2,500 — EXP: 3,600

The switched rows mean the back-attack lands on your sturdier front characters. Cecil's Shadow Armor absorbs much of the damage he'd otherwise take. Have Palom cast Fire2, Tellah cast Fire, and let Porom heal. If her party's HP is comfortable, she can contribute with Holy Arrows.

Boss Fight: Dark Knight

HP: 4,520

Just defend and allow the Dark Knight to attack Cecil three times. The battle resolves itself.

After the moving scene that follows, Cecil has undergone his transformation. Fight a few battles on the way down — Cecil can leap five levels in a single fight. Outside, save and use a Tent if needed. South of Mt. Ordeals is a square-shaped forest within a larger forest — a Chocobo Forest. The white Chocobo inside will fully restore your MP each time you speak to it. A large gap in the northern part of the village holds a Chubby Chocobo that can store extra items. Ride a yellow Chocobo back to Mysidia.

Mysidia — The Legend Confirmed

Speak to the Elder in the center of town. After the scene, buy all of the Paladin equipment for Cecil — it's expensive but if you've fought every battle along the way you should have enough. Also equip Tellah with better gear, as he's poorly outfitted. Then take the Devil's Road (inside the house on the right side of town) to teleport directly to Baron.

Baron — Dethroning the King

You arrive in the Town of Baron. Visit the Inn first, but stop at Rosa's house nearby to check a pot for a MaidKiss. Check the pot outside the Inn to the right for a Potion, and the pot to the left inside the Inn for another. In Rosa's house to the northeast, check the liquor cabinet for an Ether. The Inn's storeroom — opened by pressing the crossed-swords switch — yields an Eyedrop, Tent, and DwarfBread. When you go to speak to Yang, his guards turn hostile.

Boss Fight: Baron Guards

HP: 280 each

These guards hit hard — even fully Paladin-equipped Cecil can take 100+ HP per hit. Watch for Mini or Piggy casts on your party members; cure immediately with Esuna, DietFood, or Aprntice. Burn them down as fast as possible.

Boss Fight: Monk (Yang's Doppelganger)

HP: 62,000

The Monk always uses Kick, dealing heavy damage to the entire party. Have Tellah cast Thnd3, Palom cast Fire2, Cecil attack physically, and Porom heal continuously. Despite the intimidating HP, a focused offense brings him down in just a few rounds.

After the scene, use the Baron Key to unlock the town's Weapon and Armor shops. Fully equip Yang, fighting a few battles outside town if Gil is short. Then go to the locked door on the left side of town, open it, and enter the Old Waterway.

Old Waterway — Raid on Baron Castle

Enemies here are strong — good thing you just bought that new equipment for Yang. Head to the bottom of the waterway for three chests: a HiPotion, Ether, and ZeusRage. Make your way to the top and take the stairway. In the next room a hidden path at the bottom leads to a SpiderWeb and Copper Timer; another hidden area at the center yields a Hermes. The following room has an Ether. Proceed right, then through the next room to a save room. To the right, just above some rocks, is a secret passage hiding the Ancient Sword — don't bother equipping it; it's weaker than what Cecil already has. Exit onto the castle moat.

Baron Castle

Confronting Baigan

Work your way left along the moat and enter the castle through the lower-left entrance. If you took damage in the waterway, rest in Cecil's room in the left tower. Otherwise, head right toward the King's Throne Room. A short scene plays, then a boss battle erupts.

Boss Fight: Baigan, Right Arm, Left Arm

HP: 4,444 (Baigan), 444 (each Arm) — Gil: 3,000 — EXP: 4,840

Baigan will cast Rflct on himself but not his arms. To exploit this, have Tellah cast Rflct on an ally, then aim magic at that reflected character to bounce spells back onto Baigan — but use this sparingly, as Rflct only bounces a few times. The Arms will use Wreathe, BloodSuck, and Haste; however, destroying both Arms simultaneously causes Baigan to cast Regen and revive them. If Palom is level 19 or above, Bio deals roughly 1,200 damage to Baigan once his Reflect wears off. Tellah's Blizd3, Fire3, or Thnd3 also work well. Heal in Cecil's room afterward if needed.

Before heading to the throne room, go right and take the staircase outside the castle to reach a hidden door — the switch is the left torch. Through it are six chests: two Ethers, a Unicorn, two FenixDowns, and another Unicorn. Continue outside and under the gate into the tower. Four chests here hold two Hermes and two Berserk potions. Down the left staircase, check the second pot from the left for an Elixir — but don't venture near the mysterious barrier or it will push you back and drain your HP. The right staircase leads to two HiPotions. The following room has three accessible chests with two Tents and an Ether, plus another Ether in a pot.

Boss Fight: Cagnazzo

HP: 5,312 — Gil: 4,000 — EXP: 5,500

This fight is straightforward if you act decisively. Have Palom open with Bio, then have Tellah follow with Blizd3. Cecil and Yang attack physically while Porom heals without pause. Beware Cagnazzo's Tsunami — it hits hard. When he retreats into his shell, focus on healing rather than attacking. Deal as much damage as possible before he casts Haste on himself. If possible, de-equip Palom and Porom before the battle ends.

After a lengthy cutscene, land the airship in front of Baron and return to the King's chambers below. The mysterious barrier is gone now — enter and watch the short scene. Cid joins the party at level 20 with 788 HP and can hold his own in the front row even with his Wooden Hammer. You may visit the Village of Mist (north of Baron, encircled by mountains) for optional loot before continuing northwest to Toroia.

Village of Mist (Optional Revisit)

Walk into the fireplace in the upper-left house to pass through into a hidden room containing a GoldBand Helmet, Cloth Robe, and RubyRing. Check the upper-right grass for a Fragment, and find a secret passage among the lower trees for two more Fragments. There is also a Poet Robe available for purchase if Cid is still wearing his Convict Robe.

Toroia (Optional)

The Chocobo Farm in Toroia has useful information about Black Chocobos. Check out the café, and if you have 10,000 Gil to spare you can buy a Pass to the King's Pub for a show. Follow the stream to a small pool where a Namingway waits, then take a secret passage right through the trees to a large grass patch hiding 1,000 Gil, a Scape, an Ether, and an EtherDry.

Toroia Castle — The Crystal of Earth

Head north from Toroia to Toroia Castle. Speak to the eight Clerics who govern the country for background lore. Take the right staircase down to a room with three paths: the middle staircase holds a Beserk, the left door is guarded by a lady protecting Toroia's treasure vault (you lack permission for now), and the right staircase leads to a room with eight chests. Flip the floor switch, then collect two Tents, two HiPotions, two Ethers, and two RubyRings — hold onto the RubyRings for now despite their lower stats. Back on the first floor, take the left staircase to the bottom door to find an old friend.

Leave the castle and go north to the Chocobo Forest. A secret passage near the lower right and a press of the A button by a grass patch yields a Veggie. Press A in the lower-left open space to find the Chubby Chocobo storage, then ride a Black Chocobo northeast toward the cave between Toroia and the Chocobo Village. Bring both non-metallic and metallic equipment — you'll need to swap.

Dark Elf's Cave

The metallic seal activates inside this dungeon, jamming metal equipment. Yang can still use his Claws, Tellah can still cast magic freely, and Cecil should equip a Bow and Arrow. Running from battles until you reach the boss is a valid strategy. Take the right path from the wooden bridge for a HiPotion, then keep going until you find the next ladder. Grab the Unicorn from a chest along the way. In the following room take the left path for an Ether, then explore the northeast corner's white door to find another Ether and 2,000 Gil. Take the ladder to the left, save in the nearby room, and collect a SpiderWeb, Copper Timer, and HiPotion below. Continue left past the bridge; in the middle path through a door, there is a Fairy Claw for Yang — equip it. On floor B4F, cross the left bridge; near a cluster of candles take the right bridge across to another save point. Collect an ExitDoor and proceed to the Crystal room.

Boss Fight: Dark Elf (Round 1)

HP: 3,000

Let this fight go. Lose it deliberately and conserve your resources — a scene plays out after.

After the scene, re-equip all your metallic gear.

Boss Fight: Dark Elf / Dark Dragon (Round 2)

HP: 23,890 (Dark Elf), 3,927 (Dark Dragon) — Gil: 5,000 — EXP: 6,000

The Legend Sword in Cecil's hands deals 700+ damage per hit — use it relentlessly. Tellah's magic is largely ineffective here, so have him act as healer. Keep the party above 250 HP, as the Dark Elf/Dragon's D.Breath hits the entire party for 100–150. Apply your best attacks quickly before it starts casting Tornd and Whisper. After taking enough damage it changes form; continue the same aggressive approach until it falls.

The Crystal of Earth is yours. Return to Toroia — have Tellah cast Telep once outside the Crystal Room for a shortcut. Back at the castle, the Clerics welcome you, then Kain persuades Cecil to bring the Crystal to his airship and promises to show him where Rosa is being held.

Toroia Treasure Vault

With the Crystal secured, the lady finally steps away from the treasure room. Twenty chests await inside: a HiPotion, Medicine, Ether, EtherDry, Elixir, EchoHerb, a GreatBow, 10 Fire Arrows, another 10 Fire Arrows, 10 Lit Arrows, 10 Ice Arrows, another 10 Ice Arrows, another EchoHerb, a Silver Apple, another EtherDry, another Ether, another Medicine, and another HiPotion. Visit Edward's room for a brief scene, then return to the airship and save before boarding.

Tower of Zot — Rescue Rosa

Board the airship and follow Kain's craft. Note that you cannot return to this tower once it is cleared — collect everything. Enemies are tough, so push steadily forward. Head to the upper-left corner of the first floor for the Flame Armor, then press on to floor 2 for a Flame Sword. The Flame Sword is guarded by a FlameHound — make absolutely sure Cecil is not wearing the Flame Armor when you open that chest, or he will take massive fire damage. Continue to floor 3 (no chests) and then to floor 4, which has three center doors and one right door. Enter the first center door to get the Priest Robe — equip it on Tellah for now but remember to remove it later. The middle of the center rooms holds an Earth Hammer for Cid; equip it. In the room to the left is the HellClaw for Yang; grab it and continue left to a Flame Shield for Cecil. Return to the room with four doors and take the far-right door to reach floor 5 again. Save in the room before the next chamber, then enter.

Boss Fight: Magus Sisters (Rag, Mag, Dog)

HP: 2,900 (Rag), 4,599 (Mag), 2,591 (Dog) — Gil: 9,000 — EXP: 7,500

Focus first on Mag, the fat sister. Dog will cast Rflct on her and Rag will then bounce spells off her, so have Tellah target either of the other two with Bio — not Mag while her Reflect is up. Use Cid's Earth Hammer as a battle item repeatedly for roughly 240 damage to all three sisters (it can be used over and over). Yang and Cecil attack as normal. Watch out for Dog's Confu spell, which she casts when she's the last one standing.

De-equip Tellah before continuing. A long cutscene follows. Once you control Cecil, equip Rosa with a Bow and Arrow and the best available armor, then walk down.

Boss Fight: Valvalis

HP: 8,636 — Gil: 5,500 — EXP: 9,000

When Valvalis transforms into a whirlwind she becomes nearly untouchable — have Kain use Jump to interrupt her spin and knock her back to human form. She will cast Tornd frequently and often follows it with FingerTip immediately after, so heal the party quickly after each use. Keep Rosa using her bow when the party is healthy. Cecil, Yang, and Cid attack relentlessly. Maintain this pattern and she will fall. (Note: You can sometimes hit her even in whirlwind form, despite the conventional wisdom otherwise.)

After another scene you find yourself back in Baron Castle. Visit the room where the two children were turned to stone if you wish, but know there is no way to cure them. Head outside to your airship.

Ruins of Eblana (Optional)

Southwest of Baron near the large Tower lies the destroyed castle of Eblana. This is entirely optional and does not affect the main story. Head straight up to find a room with an open chest; in the top-right corner a chest that appears out of reach is actually accessible by walking straight into it — it contains a HiPotion. In the next room three chests are to the right and two to the left; they're inaccessible from this direction, so continue to the King's room. A secret passage in the top-right corner leads to the three right-side chests holding a Gold-Pin, a MaidKiss, and a Cottage. Return to the King's room and take the top-left passage for the two left-side chests: a Unicorn and an AlmClock. Back in the courtyard, enter the right tower; walk through the walls in the upper-left corner to grab a Whisker. Ignore the right chest and enter the next room for an Ether and an ExitDoor. Check the pots above for a Hermes, then go through the right wall of the pots to trigger a chest battle against two KuArs and a Lamia — watch out for the KuArs' Blaster attack, which paralyzes or wounds characters. The reward is the Blood Spear. Pick up the Cottage below the spear and drop into the black hole to land in a room with a Silver Timer. Head to the basement for two Ethers in the left chests, then approach the right chest fully healed — it holds a Silver Apple but requires defeating three Berserk Ogres. With Yang's Fairy Claws this is manageable. Exit and re-enter the castle, taking the left tower this time. Ignore the floor-level chests, climb to the next floor, and check the top-left pot for a Beserk and the bottom-right pot for another. The small gap on the left holds a Spirit. A hidden path in the bottom-right past the pot leads to 10 Mute Arrows and 10,000 Gil. Back on the ground floor, stop just before the exterior door and open the chest to your right to fight four SkullJars and one SteelGolem. Equip Cecil with the Flame Sword and Yang with Fire Claws, and have Tellah cast Tornd. Victory earns the Slumber Sword.

Town of Mithril (Optional)

This small island town sits directly south of Fabul. Hidden items are scattered throughout the grass — you'll know they're there when you can't walk through a spot. Search the grass to the right of town for a Mithril Staff, to the north for 5,000 Gil, and to the northeast for a Mithril Knife. The weapons shop sells inferior gear, so don't bother buying.

Agalt — Way to the Underworld

South of Baron on a small island sits the peaceful nation of Agalt, whose people speak fondly of the Dwarves below. Search the western grass for an N.Pole. Most of the equipment sold here is inferior to what you already carry. Inside the open-door house is a Namingway if you wish to rename party members. When you're ready, approach the bottomless well at the center of town and throw in the Magma Stone. This causes an earthquake that splits the mountain. Important: finish any overworld business before doing this — once you descend, returning to the surface requires special means. When prepared, fly the airship into the opened mountain.

The Underworld

Arriving Underground

Watch the scene, then save your game and enter the large Dwarf Castle nearby.

Dwarf Castle

The Calcobrena and Golbez

Enter the castle and de-equip Cid before heading to the central throne room. A scene plays out and then a fight begins — you'll have time to open the menu and prepare.

Boss Fight: Calco, Brena, and Calcobrena

HP: 1,364 (Calco / blue), 369 (Brena / pink), 5,315 (Calcobrena) — Gil: 6,500–7,500 — EXP: 15,000–21,250

There are two strategies. First: kill the blue Calco dolls before the pink Brena dolls. This takes longer but prevents Calcobrena from ever forming. Second: ignore the blue ones and fight faster — Calcobrena will appear with powerful attacks and confusion/paralysis abilities, but you can cut it down quickly. Be warned: if the fight drags on too long, Calcobrena will split back into six fully-healed dolls regardless of how many you've already defeated.

Boss Fight: Golbez and Shadow Dragon

HP: 660 (Shadow Dragon), 230,001 (Golbez) — Gil: 11,000 — EXP: 12,000

Your attacks will miss at first — don't waste turns. Golbez casts CursAura to paralyze the party, then summons the Shadow Dragon. The dragon falls automatically and the paralysis lifts. Golbez then uses Bio, Thnd3, and Fire2 — just keep hitting him and he'll go down within a few rounds.

Exploring Dwarf Castle

Take time to thoroughly explore the castle — it holds many valuable items. From the King's room, take the left staircase to the Inn. The pot near the counter holds 5,000 Gil. From there, take the next left staircase to a room with a door at the bottom and a staircase in the middle; the staircase leads to a room full of pots where a friendly Dwarf grants you access to the tower treasures. One pot in the lower-right holds a Beserk. Continue into the tower: the left side has a HiPotion, and a hidden passage below that leads to a Bl.Belt Robe. Continue right for an Ether. A Namingway is nearby for renaming party members. To the right of the Namingway, another hidden passage reaches an upper chest containing an Elixir. Return to the left tower entrance and go outside to reach the right tower.

Inside the right tower are two staircases. Grab the Dwarf Axe chest first, then take the middle staircase. The guard here allows you to take all the treasure; among the pots one on the left side holds a Beserk. Open the top chest for the Power Ring. The chest to the right of it is reached through a hidden passage and contains a Silver Timer; below that is an Elixir, and the final chest holds an Ether. Return to the tower entrance. Take the right staircase to the Weapons and Armor shops — walk between the two shops for a memorable scene at the Lali-Ho pub. Look for a secret passage at the lower-right of the pub and descend the stairs to the game programmers' room. Talk to everyone! The bookcase in the room with the sleeping developers holds a PornoMag — use it immediately.

Back at the shops, buy three Rune Rings for Rosa, Yang, and Rydia, and a Priest Hat for Rydia. Don't bother with Fire equipment; it's not particularly useful underground. Use the stairs in the top-left to drop items with the Chubby Chocobo — three Veggies are in the nearby pots if you need them. Speak to the Dwarf in front of the Liquor Shelf and he'll open a door to the castle's lower half. In the basement, three Cottages wait on the right side. On the far left is a Recovery Pot to fully heal before your next mission. Save your game and head out.

Tower of Babil (Part 1)

From outside the Dwarf Castle, head all the way west and north to find Dwarf tanks bombarding the Tower of Babil — use the distraction to enter. Take the left path for 10 Ice Arrows and another set of Ice Arrows, then take the right path for an Ether before entering the center corridor. In the next room grab the GR.Beret on the left and continue down. Take the first door you find — inside is a chest containing an Eyes monster. Defeating it yields a Blizzard Spear; equip it. Take the right door for another Eyes battle rewarding an IceBrand Sword — equip it. In the next room grab the CatClaw for Yang on the left, and a HiPotion to the right. Go through the right door for a FenixDown. Continue to find an S.Pole and a Killer Bow — equip the bow and head back. Enter the left door, save, then move right. Head to the room below, defeat an Eyes for an Ice Shield, then go up to defeat another Eyes for Ice Armor. Equip both on Cecil. Continue through the upper-left and collect an N.Pole from the chest to the right. Ignore the locked middle room for now. Grab a HiPotion along the way and head upward, entering the left door. In the next room take the right side into a door to find another save point. Collect the EtherDry just before the next room, then press left to the boss arena.

Boss Fight: Lugaie, Balnaba, FusedMecha

HP: 4,936 (Lugaie), 4,832 (Balnaba), 4,518 (FusedMecha) — Gil: 0 — EXP: 0

Concentrate all fire on Lugaie immediately: Cecil attacks, Kain uses Jump, Rosa uses Aim, Yang attacks, and Rydia casts Ramuh. Lugaie heals Balnaba constantly — eliminating him first is critical. Balnaba will initially attack Lugaie (a free turn for you), but will eventually turn on your party. If you defeat Balnaba before Lugaie, Lugaie merges with the corpse into FusedMecha for deadlier attacks — so focus exclusively on Lugaie.

Boss Fight: Lugaie (Round 2)

HP: 9,321 — Gil: 4,000 — EXP: 101,800

Strike a few times before he transforms into a skeleton. Rosa should use Aim and heal when necessary. Rydia casts Ramuh or Ifrit, Kain keeps Jumping, and Cecil and Yang attack. Beware his Laser — it will likely kill a party member outright; revive them immediately. He opens with PoisonGas and counters attacks with SleepGas, but if you're patient he'll eventually cast Medic on you, clearing all status effects. Keep the pressure on. You receive the Lugaie Key when he falls.

Return to the locked middle room and de-equip Yang before entering. Three Dark Imps attack — followed by three Goblin Captains. Afterward, exit the Tower entirely. A final scene plays outside.

Back to Baron — Attaching the Hovercraft

Return to Baron Castle. On the right side, find Cid's crew outside below the right tower — they've already fitted the Enterprise with a hook. After they finish, attach the Hovercraft by flying over it and pressing A. The crew tells you the Cave of Eblana is accessible near the Tower of Babil. Your Hovercraft was left near Mt. Hobs, northeast of Baron. Head southwest of Baron, deploy the Hovercraft, and travel to the Cave of Eblana just south of the Tower of Babil.

Cave of Eblana

From the entrance, go right to collect a Shuriken dart, then grab a Medicine and continue to the lower-right corner for a VampFang. Proceed to the next room — monsters do not attack here; the people of Eblana have taken refuge in these caves. Browse the shops: an extra Ice Armor and Ice Shield for Kain are optional (he's usually airborne), and a Black Gown for Rydia is a worthy upgrade. The weapons shop sells nothing better than what you carry. Head to the lower-left room; check the pots at the end of the nursing room for a Potion, and another pot near the entrance for another Potion.

Continue into the Pass to Babil. Grab the Ether on the right. Head up for a Tent and find a wounded guard who warns that the Young Master has gone ahead alone. Below the guard, through a secret pass, is a HiPotion. The next room holds a downed guard and a Shuriken to the right. Go up for a Spirit. In the room below, turn right immediately to access a hidden passage containing two Elixirs. Three chests below the hidden passage entrance hold a Cottage, a HiPotion, and another HiPotion. A downed guard in the center has a SpiderWeb below him and three chests to the right: a Silver Timer and two FenixDowns. Continue upward to a save room. On the right side among the rocks a secret passage leads to a chest with a Blood Sword for Cecil — but you must defeat two SteelGolems to claim it. Save, then exit the save room and go up, collecting the Gold-Pin on the left. At the top, a cutscene plays.

Tower of Babil (Part 2)

Edge, Prince of Eblana, joins the party. Go left through the wall for an EtherDry, then head upstairs. Press A on the left wall — Edge phases through it. Grab the chest in the upper-left for a Unicorn, then follow the path around. Pass a door to find a Silver Timer, then enter the door and follow the path. When you reach a south bridge, take it to fight four Berserk Ogres guarding an OgreKiller Axe — worth the fight. Return north and continue west; enter the door at the path's end. Follow the path past a door to get a LilithKiss, then enter the door. Go right and follow the path, collecting an Ashura Knife along the way. Enter the door and continue right. The first door you reach holds a save point; enter the second to progress. Through the only other door, go straight down. Heading all the way left past the long bridge you'll find three shorter bridges; take the middle one — the longest of the three — to collect 82,000 Gil.

Boss Fight: King and Queen of Eblana

HP: 60,000 each — Gil: 0 — EXP: 0

You don't need to fight at all. Simply keep the party healed and the King and Queen will come to their senses on their own. A scene follows.

Boss Fight: Rubicante

HP: 34,000 — Gil: 7,000 — EXP: 18,000

Do not heal yourselves before this fight — Rubicante will restore your wounds for you as a show of honor. Speak to him when ready. Kain's Jump deals nearly 4,000 HP per hit and Cecil's physical strikes deal about 2,300. Use Ice spells or Shiva carefully — if Rubicante's cape is closed when you cast them, the ice heals him instead. Time your magic for when his cape is open. Rosa should use Aim with Ice Arrows, and Edge should Dart Shurikens. Have Rydia cast Bio. Keep this pattern up and he falls.

In the room above you'll drop through a pitfall to the floor below. Grab a HiPotion at the top and push on; in the next room proceed upward. On floor 6F, go down and right up a bridge for another HiPotion. Another scene plays — when control returns, head back to the Dwarf Castle.

Dwarf Castle — Preparing for the Sealed Cave

Proceed to the center of the castle for a scene, then head to the hospital — the door all the way left in the room with the Chubby Chocobo — and speak to the man in the bed. After a second scene, set out for the Sealed Cave, which lies southwest of the Dwarf Castle and appears as a square shape surrounded by rocks.

Sealed Cave — Defending the Last Crystal

Unlock the door with the Tower Key and proceed to the first floor. Pick up a Monsters item just inside and enter through the door — but be warned: every door in this dungeon is a battle with an Assault Door.

Mini-Boss: Assault Door

HP: 5,000 — Gil: 4,500 — EXP: 30,000

The Assault Door immediately targets one of your characters and very shortly after casts Dimentn9, which instantly kills the target. If Rosa is fast enough, cast Rflct on the targeted character — the Dimentn9 bounces back and destroys the door instantly. If she's too slow, sacrifice that character and pummel the door with attacks, having Kain use Jump. If the door is killing multiple characters, add Summon magic to the assault. Act quickly — if the door's HP drops too low without a killing blow, it transforms into a different monster at full HP. You'll fight many of these throughout the dungeon.

Past the first Assault Door, collect an Ether and a Kotetsu for Edge. Exit this room and go left; climb the rope to encounter another Assault Door. Defeat it and continue through. In the next room grab a HiPotion and an Ether. The two surrounding rooms are empty but the Assault Doors inside are worth fighting for experience. Take the ladder below and traverse the rope walkway, picking up a Light Curtain; backtrack up and right for a FenixDown. Take the second door from the right — the first has nothing. Defeat the Assault Door inside for a Light Sword; equip it on Cecil. The third door holds a HellWind Dart, an Elixir, and another Light Curtain. Skip the third door unless you want the experience, and go to the fourth. Defeat the Assault Door inside and use the save point; heal fully. The fifth door has another Assault Door and inside you'll find a DarkHood and another Kotetsu for Edge. Continue down through another Assault Door battle to a room with an Ether. Take the left stairs to a room with a HiPotion and a FenixDown. The left door has nothing (unless you want the Assault Door fight), so continue right. Grab a SilenceBell and optionally fight the Assault Door in the nearby room. Return to the middle and descend the rope ladder. Fight the Assault Door on the right for an EtherDry and an X-Potion. Head left and down the ladder. Save again and heal, then proceed downward. Ignore the side rope ladders and navigate to the central path on floor B5F. Defeat the final Assault Door at the center and collect the Crystal. Make your way back out — a boss battle awaits before you can leave the Sealed Cave.

Sealed Cave — Aftermath

After defeating the Demon Wall, have the party leave the floor. On the next floor, have Rydia use DEJON and continue casting it until she reaches the entrance to the Sealed Cave. Right before the exit another scene plays out and Kain leaves the party — be sure to de-equip him first. At this point there are three things you can do: return to the Dwarf Castle, proceed to the Land of Phantom Beasts, or proceed to the Sylph Cave. Options B and C are completely optional, but if you are following this walkthrough, go to the Land of Phantom Beasts first.

Boss Fight: Demon Wall

HPGilEXP
28,0008,00015,000

This will probably be the hardest fight so far, unless you have gained substantial levels. The Demon Wall closes in at a fast pace, and when he gets close enough — which is far too soon — he begins using CRASHDWN attacks on single characters, killing them immediately. You don't have much time. Use all your best attacks: have Rosa cast HASTE on Rydia and have Rydia use TITAN or BIO. Have Cecil attack and Kain JUMP. Have Edge throw all his Shurikens and his Hellwind, then switch to regular attacks. He also uses STONGAZE, but don't pay attention to it — your characters won't have time to turn to stone anyway. If he already enters crushing mode, the fight is nearly lost. As a last resort, try to revive Rydia since TITAN does the most damage; don't bother healing her, just keep her alive. This battle is mostly a matter of luck.

Land of Phantom Beasts

From the Sealed Cave, go a little northwest to find a small island on the lava. Land your ship there and enter. Before moving anywhere, immediately cast LEVITA on the entire party (just press left when it points to one character) — this allows you to escape harm from the "Lava Pot Holes" and also from the Quake attacks enemies use here. Each time you enter a staircase or room you must cast LEVITA again, so keep that in mind.

Proceed to the top right corner and pick up a FENIXDWN. Walk left through a secret passage, pick up an ETHER, and continue back and to the bottom. At the bottom right corner is a HIPOTION. Proceed to the next room on the left. Cast LEVITA again, continue to the bottom, and pick up a HIPOTION. Go to the top left, pick up a COTTAGE, then proceed right and enter the next room. Go toward the bottom and pick up a FENIXDWN. Ignore the left side for now; continue right and pick up a MONSTERS item. To the right is a hidden passage — go through and head down. To the left are a HIPOTION, a POISON Axe, and a KIKUICHI. Go back all the way right and up.

Before entering the next room, go to the top and open the treasure chest to trigger a fight against five SATANITEs. Have Rydia use TITAN and have the party attack as usual. After the battle you receive a DEFENDER sword for Cecil. Now enter the grey portal to enter the Phantom World — no monsters will attack here.

Go down and pick up 6,000 Gil, then continue to pick up 5,000 Gil. Continue around, ignoring the portal to the next room, and pick up a MONSTERS item. The last chest holds an ETHER. Head all the way down to the bottom of the room; find a square of floor slightly bordered in brown. Enter it to reach a hidden room containing 10 YOICHI Arrows, an ELIXIR, an ETHERDRY, and a YOICHI Bow. Go back to the grey portal you bypassed earlier and enter it, then step off and back on again. Head down to pick up a RATTAIL. Re-enter the portal. Inside are weapon and armor shops.

Continue to the top left corner to find a save spot and two chests containing a FENIXDWN and a MONSTERS. Save your game and heal your wounds. Go down and enter the house with the yellow chocobo standing out front (the library). Make your way through a staircase and a portal. Talk to Ashura on the right. Rydia will ask for Queen Ashura's help, but she will need to test the group's worthiness first. If Rosa is at level 36 or above, select yes to enter the boss battle.

Boss Fight: Ashura

HPGilEXP
31,005020,000

This battle is hopeless without Rosa's RFLCT spell. As soon as the battle starts, cast RFLCT on Ashura. Without it, she heals herself far too fast for you to keep up. Once she is reflected, just keep attacking. Don't worry too much about healing, don't use any magic or arrows, and don't use any FENIXDWNs — she will eventually heal and revive your characters herself. When you win, you receive the ASURA summon spell.

After the battle, head back to the save room and save. Return to the room where you fought Ashura and talk to the man on the left. Select yes to begin the next fight.

Boss Fight: Leviathan

HPGilEXP
50,001028,000

This fight is no easy task. Leviathan uses his BIG WAVE attack frequently, draining about 600 HP from everybody. Make sure Cecil is not wearing any Ice equipment, because Leviathan's BLIZD2 will deal around 1,300 HP of damage to him. You may want to have Rosa cast RFLCT on Cecil so the BLIZD2 spell reflects back on Leviathan — just don't cast RFLCT on everyone so Rosa can still heal the party. Have Rydia use TITAN. If FuSoYa is with you, let him cast THND3. Have Rosa use AIM and heal when necessary. Revive party members quickly. Have Cecil and Edge attack regularly. After the battle, Leviathan will lend you his power.

After this tough fight, have Rosa cast TELEP. Check that you have at least 20 FenixDwns, 20 Aprntices, and 20 EchoHerbs — you will need them where you're going. Head to the cave northwest of the Phantom Beast cave, but heal and save first.

Sylph Cave

Watch out for two types of enemies here: MOLBOLs and TOADYWITCHs. The MOLBOLs will cast BADBRETH on a character, inflicting every status ailment at once. Remember that both Cecil and Rosa know ESUNA, so have Cecil cast it after battle whenever possible. If Cecil was hit with BADBRETH, have Rosa cast ESUNA. If both are incapacitated, use an ECHOHERB on Cecil so he can cast ESUNA on himself and Rosa. For the TOADYWITCHs, don't waste items or healing during the battle — she can't seriously hurt you, and the toads will often actually cure Frog status on their own. Just keep attacking the TOADYWITCH (the Toady Toads do nothing once she's gone), then heal from Frog status afterward.

Immediately cast LEVITA on the entire party. From the start, go right and pick up a MONSTERS item and a set of 10 ANGEL Arrows. Continue down. This room has a staircase leading up and one leading down. Take the top staircase first, cast LEVITA again, then go to the top to find three treasure chests: a HIPOTION, a MAIDKISS, and a FAIRY Rod (get the rod using a secret passage below the chests). Head right via a hidden passage in the right wall while standing on the stairs, and enter the next room (ignoring the portal). Go right and down and collect four treasure chests containing a SPIRIT, 3,000 Gil, 2,000 Gil, and a MEDICINE. Continue down to find five more chests: a MAIDKISS, MONSTERS, MAIDKISS, an EXITDOOR, and an ETHER. Drop into the hole to the right, go up and left through the wall, and enter the portal to reach a room with six treasure chests (cast LEVITA again here).

The top three chests each trigger fights against six DREAM EVILs and yield FANGs, powerful elemental attack items: the top left chest holds a RED-FANG (Fire), the top middle a WH. FANG (Ice), and the top right a BLUEFANG (Thunder). The bottom chests contain weapons: the bottom left has an ENGETSU for Edge but is guarded by two MAMMONs and two MOLBOLs; the bottom middle holds an AVENGER sword but is guarded by four MOLBOLs; and the bottom right has 10 MEDUSA Arrows guarded by two UNDRGRNDRs. Step on the portal to the right to be transported out of the cave. If you like, take the airship back to town to save and rest, then re-enter the cave.

Go down one staircase again, this time taking the bottom staircase. Cast LEVITA again — you will see a save point, though it shouldn't be necessary to save here now. Head to the very top right through a secret passage to reach the third chest you couldn't access before, which holds an ELVENBOW. Return to the save point area. To the left is 1,000 Gil and a COTTAGE. Continue down the left side to the staircase. You'll find yourself in a room with three staircases. Ignore them, go to the top middle of the room through a hidden passage, and open the treasure chest — it contains a MAGEMASH, but you must defeat six TOADY TOADs and a TOADYWITCH to claim it.

Take the middle staircase. Go up and find a HIPOTION, an ETHER, 10 LIT Arrows, 10 ICE Arrows, and 10 FIRE Arrows. Head out and up and enter the top staircase. To the left is an ELIXIR; after picking it up, proceed down. Further along you will see a house of sorts. Inside you will find a CATCLAW and a HELLCLAW that Yang was wearing earlier. Yang himself is here, but he is unconscious. Take the only staircase to reach a portal that teleports you back to the overworld.

Interlude: Side Quests After the Underworld

Talk to Giott to begin another scene. Afterwards, head out of the Dwarf Castle and onto your airship. Go to the small black hole in the upper right corner and press A — a new path will open. Once you reach the surface, there are four things to do: head for Mysidia as the King instructed; head for the basement of Baron; head to the island near Mithril Town; or go to the Castle of Fabul and talk to Yang's wife. If you are following this walkthrough, go to the island near Mithril Town first. Find the Enterprise (it's near the Tower of Babil in the overworld) and attach the Hovercraft to it.

Adamant Isle — Obtaining the Adamant Ore

Near Mithril Town, just south of Fabul, use your Hovercraft to reach the small cave on the island. Inside you will see two miniature people — talk to the one in the middle. He won't deal with you unless you have a Tail. Give him the RATTAIL and he will hand over the ADAMANT Ore. Leave and head directly north to Fabul.

Fabul — Waking Yang

Talk to Yang's wife. She will give you a FRYPAN. Leave and return to the Sylph Cave in the underworld. Make your way all the way back to where you saw Yang earlier. When you find him, give him a good whack on the head with the FRYPAN. After a short scene you will receive the SYLPH summon spell. Exit and head back to Fabul. Give Yang's wife back the FRYPAN and she will give you the CLEAVER, the strongest Dart item in the game.

Baron — Fighting Odin

Save your game outside Baron and go in. Make sure you duplicate your KIKUICHI and your DEFENDER (see the Tips section) before proceeding. Go to the basement of Baron and into the King's room. A battle will begin automatically.

Boss Fight: Odin

HPGilEXP
20,001018,000

You must beat Odin quickly, because he will use his namesake attack dealing about 4,000 HP to every party member. If you don't want to wait until your stats are much higher, have Edge throw the Cleaver at Odin for 9,999 damage. Otherwise, have Rosa use HOLY (she must be at level 55), have Rydia summon LEVIA, have Edge Dart as many items as possible, and have Cecil attack. After the battle you can now summon ODIN. Return to the underground.

Obtaining the Excalibur

In the underground, go to the southeast and talk to the sleeping Blacksmith upstairs. Hand him the Adamant Ore and the LEGEND Sword — he will tell you to come back later. Before leaving, check the pots on the lower floor (one on the left has a MEDICINE, one at the top has a HIPOTION). Head upstairs and check the liquor cabinet for a SOMADROP. For additional items, head toward Tomera in the southern part of the map and check all pots and chests in the house to the upper left: you will find a ZEUSRAGE, S.POLE, MONSTERS, ETHERDRY, FRAGMENT, and 2,000 Gil.

Head to Mysidia in the upper world. After the ensuing scenario, return to your airship and head back to the Blacksmith's house. Talk to him and you will receive the EXCALIBUR. Equip it and watch your attack power jump tremendously. If you haven't defeated Odin yet, this is a good time to duplicate EXCALIBURs and go back to Baron. Otherwise, head back to the Magical Ship.

The Moon

Aboard the Magical Ship, press A by the switch at the top to pilot the ship like an airship. Go down one room and sit in a seat to rest automatically. Go down another room to meet the Chubby Chocobo. Return to the center of the top room, talk to the Crystal, and it will take you to the moon. From the lunar surface, make a landing just northwest of the giant Crystal Palace. You will need to walk your way there, so take the cave to the left.

Inside this cave, go right and open the treasure chest to fight two EUCARYOTEs and two PROCARYOTEs and obtain a GOLDEN Apple. In the top right of this room are a STARDUST and a MOON Curtain. Pick those up, then exit through the top. Outside, head southeast into the LUNAR PATH — there is essentially nothing here. When you emerge again, make your way to the cave directly below the Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace — A Shocking Truth

To the left inside the palace is an HP and status recovery spot, and further left is an MP recovery spot — use them if you are badly injured. Head to the center of the Crystal Palace to trigger the scene. Afterward, it is highly recommended you visit the Cave of the Phantom God. Note that FuSoYa joins the party at level 50 with 1,900 HP, but his defense is very weak — keep him in the back row.

Cave of the Phantom God — Bahamut

From the Magical Ship, talk to the steering wheel at the top of the ship. Do not talk to the Crystal yet — if you do, you will be unable to obtain Bahamut until after destroying the Giant of Babil. Head to the circular ring around a giant rock east (or west) of the Crystal Palace. Land at the top of the ring, walk down, and enter the cave in the middle.

Go to the bottom and pick up a GENJI Gauntlet for Cecil, then head back up and right. Hidden passages here (and throughout the Lunar Underground) are slightly visible as a blurry horizontal mark where they begin and end. Take the hidden passage at the top right and pick up the GENJI Shield for Cecil. Continue down into the next room. Go to the top left and take and equip the GENJI Armor for Cecil; pick up the GENJI Helmet as well. Make sure you are fully healed before proceeding to the middle of the room — an unseen BEHEMOTH waits there.

Boss Fight: Behemoth (×3)

This boss almost never attacks on his own — he only counterattacks. The easiest approach is to use Blink, a Scape item, or Bushn on at least three of your characters so they can survive multiple retaliations. Just keep attacking. Have Cecil and Edge attack normally, have FuSoYa cast any level 3 elemental spell, have Rydia summon Leviathan, and have Rosa handle healing. If Kain is in the party instead of FuSoYa, have him JUMP. Three of these fights block your path through the cave — heal your wounds between each encounter and continue toward the king at the center of the room.

Boss Fight: Bahamut

HPGilEXP
45,001035,000

This battle is easy to win — the only question is how many party members you want to share the experience. Casting a single RFLCT spell (or using a Light or Moon Curtain) guarantees victory, since Bahamut's M. FLARE attack will reflect back on him. The more characters protected with RFLCT, the more experience they will earn! Once RFLCT is in place, hammer him with everything you have. After winning, you learn the BAHAM summon spell.

Leave the cave, return to the Magical Ship, heal, then go back outside and save your game. Stock up at the Lunar Humingway Cave now (southeast of the Crystal Palace) — you won't be able to once you return to Earth. Head back to the Magical Ship and return to Earth.

The Giant of Babil

A scene plays once you reach Earth, and you will be automatically placed inside the Babil Giant.

Navigating the Giant

Proceed to the top to reach the Giant's neck, then continue to the Chest area. To the left is a SHURIKEN dart. Continue down, picking up a HIPOTION along the way. Collect an ETHER, 10 YOICHI Arrows at the top, and an ALARM before the exit. Proceed to the stomach area: go up for a SILVER Apple, then back down, all the way right, and up for a SOMADROP. Continue left to the Passage and pick up an ELIXIR (it is guarded by a LAST ARM — watch out for its ELECWALL attack, so destroy it quickly). Continue to the top, where you will find a save point — heal your wounds if necessary. Do not use Tents here; use magic only. Now you will enter the Lung area of the Giant, where you must face the Four Emperors again, this time together. Rubicante will heal all your wounds before the battle begins.

Boss Fight: The Four Emperors

HP (total)GilEXP
~110,00010,00061,100

The fight proceeds through all four Emperors in sequence. First up is SCARMIGLIONE (~20,000 HP) — he is manageable. Use all your protective magic now: cast Blink on Rosa and FuSoYa. Have FuSoYa cast FIRE3, have Rydia cast FIRE3 (or IFRIT if she doesn't know it yet), have Edge cast KATON, and have Cecil attack.

Next is RUBICANTE (~40,000 HP). He is tougher, casting continuous Fire spells on the whole party. From this point on, have Rosa and FuSoYa cast KEAL3 on the party every single turn. The MP should last through the fight, but if you get desperate, cast ASPIR or use Ethers. Cast BLIZD3 or summon SHIVA against Rubicante, and have Edge use SITON.

Next is CAIGNOZZIO (~22,000 HP). This is where it gets tough — his regular attacks deal 600–1,000 HP each, and his Big Wave hits the entire party for about 600 HP. You may need to upgrade one of the KEAL3 casts to KEAL4. Use THND3 or RAMUH, and have Edge cast RAJIN. If Edge runs out of MP, switch him to regular attacks.

The final Emperor is VALVALICIA (~28,000 HP). Use the same tactics — have FuSoYa cast HOLY this time — but watch out for her MAELSTROM attack, which reduces all HP to 1 (similar to Kefka's Fallen One from Final Fantasy VI). Cast KEAL4 immediately when this occurs and keep pounding her with lightning attacks.

After the battle the four Emperors perish one by one. Return to the save point, heal your wounds, and save. Head back to the Lung and into the core, where an alarm sounds. FuSoYa tells the party to destroy the Defensive System first — otherwise all damage dealt to the core will be repaired.

Boss Fight: Control System, Defense System, Attack System

HPGilEXP
3,000 (DEFENSESYS & ATTACK SYS) / 30,000 (CONTROLSYS)10,00050,000

This is a straightforward battle. Don't bother with magic — have everyone use regular attacks, first against the DEFENSE SYS (the lower one), then against the CONTROL SYS (the large one). Do not touch the ATTACK SYS. The only incoming attack is a multi-laser dealing 100–300 HP to the party. Every two turns, have FuSoYa cast KEAL3 on the party. You may want to de-equip FuSoYa during this fight, as he leaves the party after it ends. After you defeat the CONTROL SYS, a lengthy scene plays out.

Restocking Before the Lunar Underground

A small shop in this area sells supplies. After battling all those Behemoths in the Cave of the Phantom God, you should have plenty of money. Make sure you have at least 50 FenixDwns, 20 Cottages, and 99 Yoichi Arrows (you can now buy them in the underworld at the Blacksmith's house). Buy at least two Whistles from the Humingway Cave on the moon. If you have money left over, buy Shurikens and HellWinds at the Blacksmith's house, and Ethers at the Humingway Cave. Remember to sell Cecil's Diamond equipment — now that you have the Genji set you no longer need it.

Note: all of the important characters in the game will no longer be in their previous locations — they have all gathered at the Tower of Prayer in Mysidia.

Lunar Underground

When you reach the Crystal Room, you will have a chance to speak with the crystals. You will learn that there are eight crystals of Earth and eight crystals of the Moon. When you are done, proceed to the middle and the crystals will automatically transport you to the Lunar Underground. Be aware that there are many tough opponents here and it will be quite a while before you reach the first save point. The enemies are so varied and difficult that they warrant their own breakdown.

Part 1 — Upper Floors

Expect encounters with DARKWIZARDs, MOONGODESSs, SKULLDRAGNs, and DEMONSOLDRs. Always go for the DARKWIZARDs first — their attacks are fairly weak but they're annoying. Have Edge use SNEAK against MOONGODESSs to steal Artemis Arrows, which will prove invaluable. Attack them strategically: they have 2,700 HP, so chip them down until one hit remains, then keep sneaking. Move quickly — if you wait too long, they'll cast a spell that fully heals one character while also turning them to stone, then flee. SKULLDRAGNs are easy; Cecil's swords deal major damage. When you encounter a DEMONSOLDR, go for him before even the DARKWIZARD — they have a great deal of HP.

Part 2 — Mid Floors

Here you'll find SILVRDRAGONs, GOLDDRAGONs, ALLEMAGNEs, ZOMBIESAURs, BLUEDRAGONs, and RILMARDERs. Those Artemis Arrows you stole from MOONGODESSs are extremely effective against all these dragon-type enemies. GOLDDRAGONs frequently counter with a paralysis attack, though it misses often. Defeat ALLEMAGNEs quickly — they will put a Death Sentence on you! If you're lucky, the same character gets sentenced twice, resetting the timer. If the timer is counting down, just keep pressing A; sometimes the character simply won't die. If all else fails, use Edge's KEMUR. If you face two ALLEMAGNEs at once, just run — you can't win that without losing someone. ZOMBIESAURs are also susceptible to Cecil's swords. RILMARDERs only cast RABUR on themselves — don't hit them with Lightning spells, as that will wake them up and prompt them to cast THND3 on the party. Attack them normally for easy EXP and Gil. BLUEDRAGONs are truly tough: lots of HP, very strong regular attacks, and a nasty SNOWSTRM attack. If you're lucky, a solo BLUEDRAGON may drop the DRAGON Whip, which makes dragon battles — including boss fights — much easier.

Part 2A — PudPrinces Room

There is a single room on the right side of the fifth floor that holds a RED-FANG. Fighting in this room pits you against RILMARDERs (easy) or pairs of SLVRDRAGON and GOLDDRAGON (moderately difficult), and rarely a ZOMBIESAUR. Keep fighting — save between battles — and eventually you will encounter the PUDPRINCES. These pink creatures give you one free round, then the Chocobo music starts and your characters will become BERSERKed. Heal if you get the chance. There are five PUDPRINCES with 20,000 HP each. Defeating them earns over 270,000 Gil (55,555 from each). If you are very lucky, you will also receive a PINKTAIL — bring it to the man on Adamant Isle for the incredible ADAMANT Armor. If you don't want to wait for them to appear randomly, use the ALARM item to force the encounter immediately.

Part 3 — Lower Floors

RED DRAGONs, BEHEMOTHs, and PHASEs dominate these floors. RED DRAGONs are similar to BLUE DRAGONs, though their multi-attacks are slightly less accurate. Watch out for a solo RED DRAGON — it will resurrect itself twice before you can win. BEHEMOTHs are somewhat easier now that your stats are higher; have only Cecil and Kain attack while the rest Defend, with Rosa casting BLINK and Edge casting BUSHN. PHASEs are very difficult — they immediately cast RFLCT on everyone, cutting off healing spells, then barrage the party with HOLY, FLARE, and BIO. Use your strongest physical attacks. You can aim black magic at a party member to reflect it onto the PHASE, but watch out — there's no indication when RFLCT wears off.

Part 4 — The Final Screens

ZEMUS MIND and ZEMUSBRETH appear only in the last area before Zemus, which has a red cave background. Both are technically classified as bosses. ZEMUS MIND is extremely tough — he casts both PROTC and SHELL on himself, making physical attacks harmless and magical attacks weak, then proceeds to cast CONFU on the entire party. The experience is not worth it — just run. ZEMUSBRETH is the opposite, doing almost nothing except casting RABUR most of the time. He should be easy.

Navigating the Moon's Core

When you first enter the Moon's Core, go left through the hidden passage and onto the portal. Enter the door ahead, go through, and open the treasure chest at the top to obtain a SAGE Staff — but you must first defeat two DARKWIZARDs and two MOONGODESSs. Heal afterward, then proceed left and enter the portal. Go down in the next room and enter through the door. You will be on the third floor of the Lunar Underground where a sword lies ahead — touch it to begin a boss fight.

Boss Fight: White Dragon

HPGilEXP
32,700055,000

This is a tough fight. Have Rosa cast FLOAT on the party to avoid the QUAKE attack, and keep her as the primary healer. Have Rydia summon BAHAMUT, and have Edge and Cecil attack regularly. Have Kain JUMP. The White Dragon counters every physical attack with SLOW, which will make things increasingly difficult. He can also cast MAELSTRM on characters, so heal quickly when this happens. After defeating the White Dragon, you receive the MURASAME — equip it on Edge.

Moon's Core — Final Descent

Go back to the entrance of the Moon's Core. (If you wish, have Rosa cast TELEP, then re-enter the Crystal Palace and step on both recovery plates to restore HP and MP.) From the entrance, go to the top right and enter the hidden passage to find a DARKGEAR Robe for Edge — but be ready to fight two DEMONSOLDRs.

Return to the entrance again and head down into the next room. To the left through a hidden passage is a chest containing a FIREBUTE Whip for Rydia — equip it. To the top left is a DRAGON Shield — equip it on Kain. In the middle of this room is a door. First go to the bottom right through a short hidden passage for a DRAGON Helmet (equip it), then through another passage to the right for the DRAGON Armor, and to the left of that a DRAGON Gauntlet. Proceed through the middle door.

In the next room, go right and pick up 10 ARTEMIS Arrows. Continue down and into the room to the left — inside is a chest holding an ELIXIR. Head out, go right and down, and enter the next room. At the top right is a WH. FANG. At the far left is an X-POTION. In the next room to the left is a STARDUST Rod, guarded by a BEHEMOTH. Defeat him, collect the treasure, then continue right into the walkway. In the following room you will see a sword to the right — you can't get it yet and shouldn't try. At the bottom left is a chest: make sure Rosa is equipped with the ARTEMIS Arrows before opening it — a RED DRAGON and a BLUEDRAGON will appear. After this tough fight, the reward is a special CRYSTAL Shield — equip it on Cecil.

In the next room, go to the top right to pick up a DEFENSE Ring (equip it on anyone), then enter the door at the bottom of the cave. In this area, go right and pick up the CRYSTAL Armor, but you must first defeat a BEHEMOTH. Return and go up. The chest to the right triggers a fight against two RED DRAGONs for a CRYSTAL Gauntlet. After claiming it, go left into the next room. To the left is a WHITE Gown for Rosa — equip it. Outside to the left is a CRYSTAL Helmet guarded by a DARKWIZARD and a ZOMBIESAUR. After that, enter the room to the right — inside the chest is a RED-FANG. This is the PudPrinces room; if you don't want to fight them, move on.

In the next room, pick up 10 ARTEMIS Arrows to the left and a HELLWIND dart to the right. Continue down and collect a COTTAGE to the left, then take the bottom right path. In the next room to the left is a MENERVA Gown guarded by three MOONGODESSs and one DARKWIZARD — defeat them and equip the gown on whoever needs it most. Move to the right. Go down and enter the first door: your first save spot in the Moon's Core. Heal your wounds and save your game. Then continue right to a room where a lance stands in the middle — touch it to begin a fight.

Boss Fight: Plague

HPGilEXP
33,33355031,105

Plague immediately starts a countdown timer on the entire party, so you must move quickly. Have Cecil and Edge attack normally, have Rydia summon BAHAMUT, have Rosa cast HASTE on Cecil and Edge, and have Kain JUMP. When a timer reaches zero, keep pressing A — your character may survive anyway. Plague is weak against flying attacks, so JUMP and Rosa's arrows deal solid bonus damage. Interestingly, he occasionally casts HASTE on your characters, which actually helps you. After the battle, the party wins the HOLY Lance — equip it on Kain.

Return to the save spot to restore MP, then proceed to the next room on the right where two LUNASAURUSs approach before you can reach the treasure chests.

Boss Fight: 2 Lunasauruses

HP (each)GilEXP
23,000059,000

There are two approaches. The first is to have Rydia cast FIRE3 (not a Summon spell — they will instantly heal themselves from Summon magic!) while everyone else defends and/or heals her. This is slow but safe. The second approach is to use physical attacks, but be warned: they will cast RFLCT on themselves and begin firing BIO at the party. Have Rosa continually heal, have Cecil, Edge, and Rydia (if she has the DRAGON Whip) attack regularly, and have Kain JUMP. If Rydia doesn't have the DRAGON Whip, keep her on FIRE3. There's a save point nearby, so don't hold back.

After winning, you receive two RIBBONs — equip them on Rosa and Rydia. Return to the save point, save, and restore your wounds.

The B6 Floor and Dark Bahamut

Remember the room with the COTTAGE to the left? Return there — to the left of the previous COTTAGE is an invisible bridge. Head left, and at the top through the middle of the wall is a staircase. You are now on B6; at the bottom is a GOLDEN Apple. Continue right to find a portal. Take the stairway up and through another portal to reach B5. Head straight up to find a chest containing another DEFENSE Ring guarded by a BEHEMOTH. Defeat him, heal, and continue up and through another portal into a save room — save here. Continue to find the sword you saw earlier. Before touching it, fight a few random battles and duplicate several EXCALIBURs.

Boss Fight: Dark Bahamut

HPGilEXP
60,000064,000

Dark Bahamut will very likely open with M. FLARE, which may kill several of your characters outright. He then casts RFLCT on himself and unleashes an endless barrage of FLARE spells. Have Edge Dart the duplicate EXCALIBUR swords, have Cecil attack, have Kain JUMP, have Rydia either attack with the Dragon Whip, summon ASURA, or defend, and have Rosa heal constantly and cast ARISE on anyone who falls. This is an extremely difficult fight, but persistence will win out. After the battle, you receive the RAGNAROK — equip it immediately.

Return to the B7 save point and save your game. Duplicate as many EXCALIBUR and RAGNAROK swords as possible (aim for at least five of each). Continue into the next room to find the Moon's Core interior. Pick up a HELLWIND dart along the way; at the bottom is another sword, the MASAMUNE, guarded by a boss.

Boss Fight: Tidarthian

HPGilEXP
50,000061,000

Tidarthian opens with a double BIG WAVE attack that can shave approximately 1,200 HP from every party member, then continues to use BIG WAVE frequently for around 500 HP per hit to everyone. Those duplicated EXCALIBURs will earn their keep here. Have Edge Dart the EXCALIBUR swords, have Rydia summon BAHAMUT, have Rosa revive fallen party members with ARISE and heal continuously, have Kain JUMP, and have Cecil attack regularly. Keep this pattern until Tidarthian falls.

Go back to the save point, heal, and save. Continue past the room where you defeated Tidarthian. In this room, collect an ELIXIR to the bottom right, then continue down to find a WHISTLE. Move on through the portal. In the next room, collect two HELLWIND darts — one to the bottom right, one to the left. Continue to the bottom right corner into the next area. There are no treasure chests here — proceed to the next room. Restore all of your MP with Ethers and EtherDrys before walking up.

The Final Battle — Zemus and Zeromus

Boss Fight: Zemus

This fight you cannot control.

Final Boss: Zeromus

HP
~115,000

At the start, defend until it is Edge's turn, then have him use SNEAK. You will obtain a DKMATTER — simply having this item in your inventory lessens the damage of Zeromus's devastating Big Bang spell. Don't worry about him attacking while you Sneak; he won't.

Next, have Cecil use the CRYSTAL — this causes Zeromus to change forms, and it is absolutely required: all attacks will miss unless you use the CRYSTAL first. From there, have Cecil attack normally, have Rosa cast KEAL4 every single round, have Rydia summon BAHAMUT, have Edge Dart the Cleaver (if you have it), then Ragnaroks, Excaliburs, and the Gungnir lance, then HellWinds; and have Kain JUMP. Do not bother with protective spells like SHELL or RFLCTZeromus's BLACK HOLE attack destroys them all. Since Rydia has the weakest attack, if any character is wounded, have her use a FenixDwn on that character so the next KEAL4 will bring them to full health. Use any items you need. Now sit back and enjoy an excellent ending.
