Walkthrough forUltima II: Revenge of the Enchantress

The object of the game is to kill Minax, the evil apprentice of Mondain. Certain commands and items are essential to your success.

1. The Basic Basics

View (V): Gives you a bird's-eye view of the village, town, castle, time zone, or planet you are on. You must have a helm to use this command. Enemy fighters often carry helms.

Board (B): No problem boarding a horse or a plane; however, to board a frigate (boat) you need a blue tassle. Once aboard, you can use the Fire (F) command, which is more effective than any weapon a character can carry.

Launch (L): To launch a plane you need to have boarded it first, and must be carrying a skull key and a brass button. To land, press L again while over grassland. If you try to land on a mountain you die; over water or forest, the command is ignored. To launch a rocket you need to be wearing power armor and carrying tri-lithiums — one tri-lithium is needed for each launch and hyper. Rockets can be found in Pirate's Harbor, a village in the aftermath (2112) time zone in what is now Russia. Rules for landing are the same as with planes.

Negate Time (N): Eliminates the enemy's ability to move (but not attack). You need a strange coin to negate — each negate consumes one coin.

2. Surviving Early On

Running out of food: Food can be bought at a variety of villages and towns. If you are a thief, you can Steal (S) food — but beware of guards. If they see you, they will pursue and attack.

Losing hit points: Travel by time door and/or frigate to England in 300 BC or 1990. Enter the castle. On the north-central area, there is a sign that says "British" — under it is a king. This is Lord British. Transact with him and he will take 50 gold and raise your hit points by 300. Later in the game he gives 200, then 100. You can have up to 9999 hit points.

Attributes too low for better gear: In North America in 1990, there is a town in the New Mexico area. On the southwest corner is a building called The Hotel California. In the south end is a merchant. Offer him 100 gold. He will either reply "Thank you very much" (nothing happened) or "Alakazam!" (one of your attributes went up by four, chosen randomly). Strength lets you wear better armor; Agility lets you handle better weapons; Intellect/Wisdom improves spell casting; Stamina improves defense; Charisma lowers prices.

Exploding when launching a rocket: You are not wearing power armor!

The force field: If you walk through something that looks like moving arrows and the game says "Field takes 1000 hit points!", you have hit the force field. To pass unharmed you need the ring (see below).

3. Getting the Quicksword

The Quicksword is the only weapon that can kill Minax. First, get 500 gold.

Go to New San Antonio (the town with the Hotel California) and go to the upper left corner. There is a building marked "Airport." To get in you need three keys. To get keys, kill guards in villages — Pirate's Harbor in the aftermath time zone in northern Russia is a good choice: steal a ship from the port and fire away.

Once inside the airport, kill the fighter who owns it. Board his plane immediately and launch, but do not leave the town. Head east towards the prison. Land on the grass directly outside the prison (cobblestone cannot be landed on). Taxi to the door, unlock it (need a key), and kill the guard. Exit the plane at the doorway to block additional guards. Go to the cells and enter the one containing a fighter (you'll need another key). Offer him 500 gold and he will give you the Quicksword. Board your plane, launch, and escape.

If you can move diagonally: You only need two keys and 500 gold. Go straight to the prison, unlock the door, go past the guard peacefully, open the fighter's cell, give him 500 gold, take the Quicksword, and leave without trouble.

4. Venturing to Planet X and Getting the Ring

Do not attempt this until you have both power armor and the Quicksword, and at least fifteen tri-lithiums.

Find Pirate's Harbor in the aftermath time zone in northern Russia. Steal a boat and head to the building marked "Mission Control." Board one of the rockets and launch. After achieving Earth orbit, hyper to coordinates 9-9-9. You will either achieve orbit of Planet X or drift off course — if you drift, hyper again. Land when you are over grass.

Exit the rocket and look for the castle (use View if needed). Once inside, you can restore your hit points. Inside the left-side maze is a cleric named Father Antos. Transact with him — he will say: "You have my blessing. Now return home and claim the ring!"

Return to Earth (coordinates 6-6-6). Go to the AD time zone, then to New San Antonio. Above the armory there is a door to a forest. Open the door and go in. There is a sign that says "ATREE" and an old man sitting under it. Give him 900 gold and he will give you the ring.

5. Winning the Game

Get as many hit points as you can and get an airplane. Travel by time door to the Legends time zone. Launch and go south. Land near the castle and enter it. You will likely be attacked by two devils — do not attack them, as that would unleash the guards. Use Negate Time to get rid of them.

In the northwest chamber there is a maze of force fields. At the end of the maze is Minax. Attack her. When she gets low on hit points, she will teleport to the other chamber. Fight your way through the monsters, follow her to the other chamber, and kill Minax.

You have won!
