Avernum 4 has you in charge of a 4-character party, whose task is to discover why your homeland of Avernum has been undergoing a series of unnatural disasters. The game uses a modified version of the Geneforge engine, meaning that its interface is entirely different from the previous Avernum games. Although the character pictures are the same (the ones that are displayed in the inventory screen), the graphics used for the characters in the game are different. This also applies to the graphics used for the enemies as well. The game is played using the mouse and keyboard, with the former serving as the main means of control, and the latter providing shortcut keys. Thus movement, object interaction, combat, and dialogue is controlled via the mouse, although the game can be configured so that the keyboard can be used for movement as well.
Combat is a standard, turn-based affair. Each character has a finite number of action points that are spent either in melee/ranged attacks, movement, or spell casting.
