Carbon Has You Choose Between Tech and Bio

Hardwired Studios gave a peek on what players can expect for their upcoming action RPG Carbon. The game is set in a cyberpunk/biopunk world as players create a path to power through 18 uniquely themed specializations.

Carbon puts players in the role of a nameless convict who has been drafted into forced service for a megacorporation’s private army. Before they're deployed, their body is rebuilt. It's either rewritten at the DNA level or being reinforced with black market cybernetic implants. Regardless, it means they're no longer fully human. They're then dropped onto the ruined surface of the Earth and sent into combat zones crawling with rogue AI, hostile factions, and warped remnants of failed experiments.

In a statement, the studio shared that whatever choice players make, it can't be undone. That's because it shapes the abilities, combat rhythm, and ultimately identity within the world of Carbon.

Tech Option

This option is all about rebuilding the body through cybernetic implants and engineered precision. Its most offensive abilities generate heat. Players need to be careful since as the heat accumulates, the system starts to strain with the overheating resulting in certain skills being temporarily locked out. It's important to manage cooldowns, implants, and heat-free abilities.

When it comes to Tech characters, their primary defense is a personal energy shield. This regenerates automatically over time and it's possible to enhance it with the use of gear, implants, and passive upgrades. As long as the shield holds, health remains untouched. However, once it collapses, the incoming damage goes straight to HP.

For the Tech character, dealing damage fills the Overload bar. When fully charged, activating Overload temporarily augments every offensive ability with unique additional effects.

Bio Option

The second option in Carbon is Bio, which is about reshaping DNA and embracing that raw biological power. Bio characters rely on Protein, which serves as the biological energy of their altered bodies. There are abilities that generate Protein while others consume it to release those brutal and high-impact attacks. Power is earned and then released.

The thing about Bio characters is that they don't use energy shields. Instead they have a hardened organic armor called Carapace. It doesn't regenerate automatically and instead is restored through Defense Stance as it scales with stacks gained by dealing damage. Speaking of stance, there are two for the Bio. Offense Stance increases damage output by 20% while Defense Stance focuses on survival and Carapace regeneration. The key is to switch stance at the right time to allow Bio to shift seamlessly between aggression and resilience in the middle of combat.

Carbon is made possible by a team of industry veterans and ARPG enthusiasts who have long believed that the sci-fi theme was underrepresented in this genre. A demo of the game is available on Steam. Wishlist Carbon now.
