Fight Spiders as Arachnophobia Arrives to HELLCARD

There's a lot of reasons why HELLCARD players should be excited about this month. Actually there are eight reasons and that's because spiders not only have joined the battle but have arrived in greater numbers than ever before. These eight-legged beasts not only go after the party but can even web cards and trap abilities and make combat a rather sticky situation.

Spiders though are not the only new monsters that's set to arrive in the game. Other crawlers are:

  • Arachnad: Can spawn arachnids upon death,
  • Corrupted Arachnod: Can attack with poisons.
  • Hot Crawler: A scorpion beast who affects your card draw.
  • Slithering Bowman: A demon whose ranged attacks impact cards.
  • Horror Whopper: A giant skeleton who can buff other monsters when not attacked.

Released in February 2023, HELLCARD is a cooperative roguelike deckbuilder with the choice to play in single player where you get to go down into the dungeons solo or recruit computer-controlled companions. Multiplayer mode has your friends, or even strangers, help in the fight against the hordes of hell.

The game takes place in the paper dungeons known from Book of Demons, and its main mechanics revolve around deckbuilding and fast-paced tactical card battles. What makes this one different when compared to other deck-building games is that the placement of the monster matters and can be used to your advantage.

A Stand-alone Game

HELLCARD was develop by Thing Trunk, the same studio responsible for Return 2 Games. R2G is a series of unique mid-core games that's inspired by the golden days of gaming PC. Each R2G title pays homage to a single hit game from the 90s. Every game is a reimagination of a single universal story developed for a brand-new audience. While the studio does make use of modern means, it makes sure that the gameplay mechanics are innovative and simplified.

HELLCARD was originally planned to be a new game mode inside the Book of Demons universe. However, the studio later realized that the design was huge and that it would be better that it was executed as a stand-alone spin-off game.
