New Update for Wartales Makes Improvements to AI

Attention Mercenaries! The fifth Community Update for Wartales has finally arrived. This is also the first update of the game in 2025.

The update introduces a lot of changes and improvements to the game. One of these is the improvements made to the AI. Developer Shiro Games revealed that a lot of long-time players are often able to predict how the AI moves. The new update changes the behavior of the AI in two main areas.

Movement

One of the changes is focused on Movement. Prior to the update, AI was observed to engage the closest enemy, regardless of the potential dangers along the way. The improvement has friendly AIs taking into account the different areas of effect of skills, traps, and even hazards. In addition, the AI now prioritizes not taking damage versus dealing damage.

Enemy AIs also have the same behavior but with an additional criteria. This is combat difficulty and the unit type.

Decision Making

The new update introduces new criteria that impacts the decision-making of the AI. These are:

• Target's Distance

• Target's Status

• Attacker's Skill

The AI now assesses which options are available based on the criteria mentioned and then picks a target. If no target is within range, the AI is going to try to get closer to the one with the highest score. The studio hopes that with this, there should be more diversity when it comes to the behavior and at the same time offer more of a challenge.

New Maps

The new update also sees the addition of seven new battle maps. Encounters around roads of these regions trigger a battle on these new maps:

• Edoran

• Gosenberg

• Gosenberg (Beach)

• Alazar

• Alazar (Mountain)

• Harag

• Harag (Marshes)

What Comes Next?

With Community Update 5 now launched, the next release is The Beast Hunt DLC. It introduces a new minor region, new storyline, new animal units, and even new profession. This is expected to come out sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Then the third quarter sees the release of Community Update 6. New DLCs are planned for the fourth quarter though details have yet to be released.
