Support Gem System Overhauled in Path of Exile 2

A new update was released last week in Path of Exile 2. A lot of new content have been added along with interesting changes made. One of the overhauls done was on the Support Gem System.

The development team shared that some of the major changes were on support gems. These are the reasons why the game had a lot of interesting mechanics along with different ways to play. However for the team, the support gem system had the feeling of "just never been quite right."

One of the major issues for example is the limitation of only having one support gem of each type on a character. The team said they didn't want builds to be just using the same 5 most powerful supports on every skill. However, they also wanted to encourage players to combo their abilities. As a result, the restriction of having one of each support gem per character has been removed. This means players can now use as many copies as they like.

The team went on to say that a lot of Supports have multiple tiers as they progress through the game which provide different stat values, additional stats, or even working a bit different to their lower-tier counterparts. These changes have resulted in a lot of existing support gems getting small numerical balance changes with the effects of some support gems being combined into a single gem.

Update 0.3.0 sees the addition of 11 new Support Gems along with the introduction of 40 Lineage Supports. Players should also be happy to know that some Support Gems with simple effects have been renamed with names that more obviously hint at their functionality.
