Sword Art Online Last Recollection is the culmination of the alternate storyline which began in 2013 with Sword Art Online Infinity Moment. In the original storyline, after Kirito defeated Heathclif he and his friends were finally able to log out of Sword Art Online. But in the Infinity Moment storyline, what happened instead was that a glitch resulted in Kirito and the rest of the game being forced to stay in the game world. Making the problem words is that players from other VRMMORPGs seem to have been sucked as well in SAO.
Sword Art Online Last Recollection itself is based on the War of Underworld arc of the original novel and anime series. However, this time things take a a different turn and the story deviates from the canon.
The heroes now have to travel to the Underworld. It seems that the tension between the Human Realm and Dark Territory has been increasing. If the issue is not resolved, it could result in a war between the humans and AI. However, what the heroes don’t know is that everything seems to be part of the final stage that’s known as the “Alicization Project.” This is a secret experiment that’s currently being conducted by humans in the real world with the goal of ensuring that the war in the virtual world proceed and force the evolution of AI.
