Agalta is a fairly traditional Japanese RPG with all the familiar ingredients of the genre: linear progression, party of up to three people, top-down locations and world map, random enemies, turn-based combat viewed from first-person perspective. There is, however, a real-time element in the combat, similar to the ATB system of Final Fantasy series: the player is required to choose menu commands quickly during the battle, since the enemies would attack regardless of whether the command was chosen or not.
