Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships takes place in the Caribbean, in the year 1665 where the player tries to forge destiny in the role of a sea captain, choosing various different approaches to achieve fame and fortune, by becoming an adventurer, a corsair, or a merchant.
The adventurer actively seeks explores the seas and land for hidden treasures and undiscovered mysteries. The corsair finds fame and fortune by attacking ships and plundering cities, may it be legal with a letter of marquis, or by being a dreaded pirate. The merchant buys and sells good at the various cities in the Caribbean, while optionally completing various available trade assignments. Regardless of the available professions, during gameplay the player is free to choose which approach the player deems favorable.
Selectable Characters
The player may choose one of three of the available characters. Choosing any one of the available characters will introduce selective some minor differences in the story, starting ships and mates, and other minor features. Other than that, gameplay and progress is basically unrestricted depending on the player.
The characters that may be selected are:
- Diego Espinoza - A Spanish adventurer.
- Peter Blood - An English corsair.
- Jan Stance - A Dutch merchant.
For each character, the player may optionally change the profession (adventurer, corsair, merchant) and their nationalities.
Character Development
Character development in this game skill-based, meaning that skills increase if manually activated by the player or certain events automatically activate other passive skills. Character statistics are as the following:

Capabilities
Represent the character’s primary statistics. Each capability will effect the starting statistic of other skills, as well as how fast that skill will later increase through continued use. The capabilities consist of: Power, Insight, Reaction Authority, Talent Endurace, and Success. Personal and Ship Skills
These skills represent the manual or passive skills that require player participation in order to increase. Each stat is represented by a level; each level is increased when the skills is used, represented by a percentage increase and how much effort must the player use that skill in order to increase to the next level (e. g. 0/150). The higher the level of the skill, the increasingly larger the requirement for the next level. Personal skills represent melee combat-related and land skills, which consist of the following: Leadership, Light Weapons, Medium Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Pistols, Luck, and Stealth. Ship skills represent ship combat-related and sea skills, which consist of the following: Navigation, Accuracy, Cannons, Grappling, Defense, Repair, and Trade. Abilities
Abilities are special or unique abilities that the player may obtain through leveling up in a required amount of either Personal Skills or Ship Skills, when one of either skill reach the level-up requirement (e. g. 0/35). There are more than 10 abilities of either Personal Abilities or Ship Skills that may be acquired, where personal abilities usually represent abilities that are melee related (e. g. Basic Defensive Arts) and ship skills represent abilities that are ship-combat related (e.g. Smooth Sailing). Ranks
Ranks represent the overall combination levels of both Personal and Ship skills, or most commonly known as Player Level. The higher the rank, more difficult enemies (e. g. ships) may be encountered by the player, as well as more advanced and interesting items may also be found.
