Double Fine has a prototyping session called Amnesia Fortnight where the team takes a break on whatever they were working on and works on prototypes for game design ideas presented by Double Fine employees. In 2012, this prototyping session went public for the first time. Through Humble Bundle, people voted on which ideas would be made into prototypes from video pitches by members of the Double Fine team. The winning prototypes were designed over a two week period and released digitally, and then later were available on DVD.

The prototype games included in Amnesia Fortnight 2012 are Hack ‘n’ Slash, an action-adventure game that has mechanics which allow you to hack the game’s code to proceed in the game world, Spacebase DF-9, a simulation game set aboard a space station, The White Birch, an ambient platformer, Autonomous, a first-person robot sandbox game set in the future, and Black Lake, a fairy tale exploration game.

There were also three bonus prototypes included from non-public Amnesia Fortnight sessions. Brazen is a Monster Hunter-style four-player online co-op game with an art style that is an homage to Ray Harryhausen films. Two prototypes for games that were previously released as commercial games were included as well. These prototypes were for the Halloween themed RPG, Costume Quest, and for a music rhythm game featuring a monster named Marco, called Happy Song. Happy Song would become Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster.

Three games from Amnesia Fortnight 2012 later became full releases. These games were Hack ‘n’ Slash, Spacebase DF-9, and Autonomous.
