Battleheart is a role-playing game with action-based combat. It is set in a fantasy setting and has no plot - the thirty levels of the campaign are series of fights. Sometimes there are bosses to fight which require special tactics.

Each mission is entered with a four-person team, but there are many characters with different classes to choose from. The difference between the classes are their combat roles (the classic damage dealer, tank or support division) and the special attacks. Active characters gain experience points which eventually lead to a level up which improves the characer’s basic attack and defense statistics. All few levels it also allows to unlock more special abilities on the skill tree. Money is used to buy items (e.g. healing items or stat-boosting trinkets) or class-specific equipment (weapons and armor) between rounds. Alternatively there is also the option available to upgrade existing equipment or recruit more characters.

The combat itself is basically touch-based micromanagement of the characters. What the player has to do is point on the character and draw a line to the goal, e.g. moving a supporter away from the heat of battle or ordering someone to attack. For using special abilities, an additional tap is required. Besides playing or repeating the normal levels, the player can also visit arenas where the characters face a never-ending stream of monsters until they die. Arenas reward no experience, but money and equipment drops.
