Catacombs of the Phantoms is a 1-player roleplaying game for the 8-bit Atari.

The opportunities in Pettieville were certainly not great, but when asked about adventuring opportunities, the town’s doddering old wizard mentioned the Catacombs of the Phantoms.  Deep within, lies the Golden Goddess of Power that the sorcerer Agalinta was rumored to have hidden.

A text-based game, the player must move deeper through numbered chambers to reach the final prize.  Each player has strength, which is a health variable, and agility which effects combat ability.  Each room may have a monster, a treasure chest, and a fountain.  Fountains can improve strength or agility, but there are limited drinks before they go dry.  Treasure chests can contain items and gold, but may also be trapped, damaging the player.

In combat, the player’s agility is compared with the monsters’, which determines how much strength is lost in the fight.  Phantoms can appear, which may help or hinder the player.

The player also has a limited number of worms, which can burrow to lower chambers, allowing the player to skip a section of the dungeon.
