Picking up where the prior installment, Choice of Romance, left off, this multiple-choice game casts the player as a Death Mage in the magical medieval land of Iberia, ensconced in a privileged position in the royal court. Over the course of the game, players will deal with intrigues and threats from all sides, with hostilities threatened from Sahra, the kingdom to the south, ultimatums posed by rival noble families within Iberia, opposition from practitioners of Life Magic, competition for the monarch’s essential romantic interest, dissent from members of the player’s own birth family and, above all, complications to the primacy of the player’s child’s place in the line of succession to the throne. The tools at the player’s disposal range from gossip and strategic intelligence to poison and magic to outright treason. Fortunes will be made or broken, and heads may roll in the outcome.
Beyond the mere hand-holding down forking paths most choose-your-own-adventures offer, this game tracks numerous RPG stats in the background reflecting the player’s choices and the success of their outcomes, and characters can be imported from Choice of Romance (the two available on the Kindle in a bundled omnibus edition entitled Affairs of the Court), and the stage is set for a third act in which the final trajectory of the kingdom is determined.
The browser version can be played independently. For iOS and Android it is available as an “expansion” through an in-app purchase in Choice of Romance, and not as a standalone game.
