Corpse Party is a horror game that follows Kisaragi Academy’s student Mayu Suzumoto and her group of friends as they perform a charm called “Sachiko Ever After.” The charm is supposed to bond them together as friends, but things go horribly wrong when an earthquake separates them and they find themselves trapped in Heavenly Host Elementary, an alternate reality vengeful spirits-filled school. Players take control of nine main characters who explore the environment of the school to uncover the chilling details surrounding the murders that occurred there over 50 years. The game provides an adventure-style gameplay where the player’s choices significantly alter the course of the story and its final conclusion. The tale is told through five main chapters with multiple endings each and numerous scenes that differ from its counterparts, and there are four bonus chapters, one of which is exclusive to the PC version of the game. The game has highly detailed retro-style graphics that help create a horror atmosphere, and over 5,000 lines of spoken Japanese dialogue from the game’s original indie voice cast complement the action. Corpse Party sparked a boom in Japan when it was first released in 2008, and fans of the series can now experience the original game that started it all.
