This long-running online fantasy role-playing game started out in 1990 on GEnie (General Electric Network for Information Exchange) as a text-based MUD (Multi User Dungeon), a precursor to current MMOs and had an hourly fee. It was later brought to America Online in 1996 with a GUI base then in 2001 to Mythic Realms for anyone with an internet connection before it was finally released on its own.
After creating an individualized character from one of several classes and races, you will interact with other players and NPCs (monsters, merchants, etc.) in the game world while adventuring through scenarios run by a game master (GM) or another player. You can complete quests alone or with partners, search for loot and glory, compete in gladiator games and make new friends. Statistics are not emphasized but kept to a minimum though some are shown. Life continues in the persistent world 24 hours a day with religious and political strife even without your intervention.
Dragon’s Gate was officially closed on February 10, 2007.
