Dungeon of Ymir is a dungeon crawling RPG where the player has to find the sacred Sword of Kaslo. The dungeon consists of multiple levels connected with stairs that the player has to explore. There are plenty of monsters that will come in the hero’s path and the combat with these is automatically performed when contact is made. Once the battle has started it can not be cancelled. If healing potions are available they will be automatically used in combat when needed. Hit points lost will automatically recharge after battle. Defeating a monster leads to an increase in experience points and ultimately the player will level up. Some of the monsters that the player will encounter are minotaurs, archers, birdmen, dire wolves, three-legged gremlins and ghastly ghouls.
Various objects can be found around the corridors of the dungeon. This includes gold, spell vials, lamps and mysterious chests. There are also temples that the player can visit. A few different kinds of spell can be cast: drift, shield, teleport and invoke rejuvenation. The player can also use healing potions. Sometimes the player might stumble upon an oracle who might help the player.
