Growlanser II: The Sense of Justice is a sequel to the first Growlanser; it is set in the same universe and timeline, featuring characters from the previous game. The story once again focuses on the war between the kingdoms of Rolandia and Burnstein; as opposed to the first game, the spotlight here is on the latter, as the player takes control of a young knight named Wein Cruz. Dreaming of becoming an Imperial Knight, the highest rank in his country, Wein gradually begins to see that not everything is the way it seems, and has to recount events from his own past, face injustice, and solve moral dilemmas concerning duty and friendship.

The gameplay mostly follows the template introduced in its predecessor. It is a tactical RPG (also called SRPG, “strategy RPG”) with the distinguishing characteristics of the series: the real-time element in the turn-based battles. Physical attackers must actively move towards the selected target; mages require time to execute spell; instead of the traditional “grids” the movement range depends on the characters’ speed parameters, etc. New to the series is the ability to equip unique “Ring Weapons”, which can be enhanced by imbuing them with gems that have various beneficial effects on the character.

As in the first game, there is a strong dating element in Growlanser II. The player can choose to date several female characters in the game, choosing dialogue options and other decisions of the protagonist. The ending sequence is ultimately influenced by this decisions.
