Game Details

Hengband is based on a Japanese version of Zangband, meaning it can also trace its roots to Angband. While the goal is still to defeat Oberon and the Serpent of Chaos, significant changes and additions have been introduced, some of which are associated with Japanese culture, including videogames. Examples are:

  • More than a dozen new classes, including Ninja, Samurai, and the Final Fantasy inspired Blue, respectively Red Mage.

  • Additional races. Among these, the Android race stands out, as the level of a character belonging to it is directly related to the equipment, rather than the usual experience gain by battling enemies.

  • New monsters, including unique Dragons from the Lodoss universe.

Major changes have been made to the overworld. Aside from the main dungeon, there are now multiple, differently themed dungeons, with unique features and guardians.
In the Anti Melee cave for instance, a player cannot directly attack enemies. The game also has tweaked mechanics, new items, and features proficiencies for weapons, spells and some new skills, like riding.
