Return to Chaos

Return to Chaos is a freeware remake of the engine behind the influential Dungeon Master game series, recreating the original classic RPG released in 1987, the Chaos Strikes Back expansion and the 1994 sequel The Legend of Skullkeep. The three remakes can be selected as separate modules from a menu at the start, showing a list of all the available mods. A dungeon editor is included to create custom scenarios and import new assets, with fan-made dungeons available at the official forum site.

There are some minor differences from the original, mainly in monster behavior and the magic system. The graphics are slightly improved, with more complex lighting from torches and spells, added transparency effects and improved shading for objects. Otherwise, it’s the same RPG with its classic streamlined design, preset characters and a much-imitated mouse-driven interface to explore dungeons and engage in combat.
