Players can choose from three main characters, Marine, Pilot, and Engineer, each with their unique skills and abilities. The game boasts 30 challenging levels, filled with dozens of enemies, over 50 weapons and armors, and a random augmentation system that ensures each game is unique. The Pit features a crafting system that allows players to create special items from their enemies, over 100 items to discover, and dozens of room types, each with unique devices to help or hinder progress. Additionally, the game features hidden messages, crafting recipes, and bits of Sword of the Stars lore waiting to be discovered. However, players must be careful as they are also faced with multiple ways to die, including traps, disease, starvation, radiation, and most prominently, monsters.
