The Realm of Angbar: Elfhelm’s Bane is a text-based RPG for the Apple II.
Welcome to the city of Elfhelm, wanderer. It appears a little-known priesthood devoted to the dreaded evil deity the Wormlord has set up a large temple in the very heart of the city. The gratitude of the realm shall fall upon the brave adventurer who can raid the temple and emerge victorious over the hordes of the Nameless One.
Gameplay is entirely text-based. The player can be a warrior, priest, or mage. The player starts out at the fountain in the center of Elfhelm, and can explore different locations, including: the mall, clanhouse, arena, pawnshop, and the palace. Various town inhabitants wander about, and many of them can become hostile to the player. As the player engages in combat, more enemies often appear to join the fray.
The player can not interact with any of the city’s inhabitants except to fight with them, and there is only the single quest, but there is no text nor reward when the Wormlord is defeated. As the player gains more experience, they can level up, but each training session requires a large amount of gold.
Elfhelm’s Bane was originally set up to have a number of other add-on scenarios, and the entryway to these areas can be found as the player explores the city of Elfhelm. These add-ons were not produced, and the areas can not be entered.
