In case you didn't know, the collectible RPG Dragon Spirits 2 has been launched for the PC via Steam. The thing is, there are players wondering how this new title is related to Dragon Spirits. Developer FHNBHJ has released a post addressing these questions.

Now before reading further, we'd like to warn everyone that there may be spoilers for Dragon Spirits.

That said, what's the difference between the two games? The developer revealed in a post that the stories for the two games don't rely on each other with the exception of some background information on the characters. The best way to describe it is that the two games are set in the same universe.

Localization

While this new title does have the core of the Dragon Spirits battle system, there are new features introduced. One of the big changes is in the localization. According to the developer, they outsourced the localization work for the first title. That was a mistake they won't be making again. That's because if the mechanics of the game are poorly translated, it's going to feel like "playing Yu-Gi-Oh with Google Translation."

To ensure that problem is minimized, the developer made the translation themselves despite not having English as their first language.

Difference in Visuals

Another difference is that the resolution has been improved. It's also important to note that to get the 2.5D-like three-dimensional sense and improve the visual effects of battle animations, the layout of the game's battle system was changed from side-view to front-view.

Now because the theme of the game is urban fantasy, the developer made sure to reflect that in the art style. The developer also shared that as a result of limited budget and game assets, the scene exploration has been changed to VR-like first-person perspective horizontal scrolling.

Gameplay Changes

In addition to the technical changes, there are also enhancements to the gameplay. The number of exclusive skills of each Dragon Spirit has been increased. However, the developer did try to avoid one of the Dragon Spirits being a higher substitute of another.

Another change is the level cap has been increase to 100 from 20, with the EXP curve being adjusted accordingly. While leveling can suppress opponents with Stats, it does so to a certain extent. For example, level 100 still cannot form a significant suppress against level 90. Then there's the EXP distribution system which has been changed to Cognition Mould system. Players can equip a Dragon Spirit with a maximum of 3 Moulds to adjust its six Stats. This prevents in the to distribute EXP repeatedly especially considering that the battle roles of the Dragon Spirits shift depending on the situation.
