There's a new turn-based RPG that's now available on Steam and is sure to make fans of the genre happy. Moonring offers a retro-inspired open-world that's done in the style of classic Ultima games. However, one big different is that it was developed from scratch with consideration for modern design sensibilities. It was made by the co-creator of the Fable series, and everyone gets to enjoy it since it's free right now.
Welcome to Caldera
The game is set in the land of Caldera which was plunged into an endless darkness five centuries ago. Years later, five moons went up in the sky and brought not only light but also strange Gods. Arriving with these Gods were Dreams, which are calls to Devotion with the promise of supernatural gifts. As a result, a new civilization in Caldera was born.
Now the land has become all about Devotion and Dreamers as well as Gods and Gifts. Serving as the mortal representative of the Gods is the one known as the Dreamless Archon. Unlike the Gods, Archons aren't immortal which means a successor has to be found.
In the game, players take on the role of a Dreamless, someone who is free to choose their own destiny and even ask questions which others are afraid of. It's even possible for them to become the Archon.

From the Creator
Talking about the game, creator Dene Carter revealed that he's loved RPG ever since the early 1980s. Moonring is apparently his love letter to a style of gaming that's no longer in fashion. That is, a game having those vivid and bright sprites which have been overlaid on stark black backgrounds. It's a game that can offers true open-world gameplay with no handholding.
Enjoy Moonring on Steam now.
