Square Enix announced that its upcoming title SaGa Emerald Beyond is coming out on April 25, 2024. Digital versions are going to be available on consoles that include the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. The game is launching as well for mobile platforms through Android and iOS. Of course, a PC version is also available via Steam.
This reveal was done during the SaGa Glimmerfest 2023 34th Anniversary Livestream courtesy of the development that include SaGa series Producer Masanori Ichikawa, Executive Producer and SaGa series General Director Akitoshi Kawazu, and Localization Director Neil Broadley. The team also unveiled a new key art which featured the full cast of the game. You can view some of the screenshots here.
That's all since they also gave us a peek into two of the game's key characters. The first Tsunanori Mido who hails from the Mido family. This bloodline makes use of a unique ability which is to control kugutsu puppets to complete different odd jobs. He joins the Cathedral Project, a group composed of explorers who are investigating other worlds. For Tsunanori though, his goal is to repair the weakening barrier of the city and in turn reclaim lost spiritual energy.
The second character is Ameya Aisling, who is known for her pseudo-identity Yumeha Izumi. This Miyako City schoolgirl is actually a witch from Pulchra who had her powers stolen from her. Ameya hopes that by following the mysterious emerald waves, she’ll be able to discover who stole her mana and become the best witch anyone has ever seen.
SaGa is a series of revolutionary role-playing games which was created by legendary game developer Akitoshi Kawazu, responsible for titles like Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy II, and SaGa Frontier, to name a few. Since the release of The Final Fantasy Legend back in 1990 for the Game Boy, the series has since expanded and now has additional entries released across different platforms. Other regulars of the SaGa series include illustrator Tomomi Kobayashi who gave the series its very own unique style. Then there's also composer Kenji Ito.
While the SaGa series does share its roots with Final Fantasy, it has incorporated its very own revolutionary and challenging gameplay mechanics. The series also features its very own characters having different playstyles.
