Solo developer Max Mraz and publisher Midwest Games unveiled the in-game map for Tombwater. It shows the sheer size of what players can expect for this upcoming 2D souls-like action RPG. In particular, it offers a look into the almost 20 unique 20 distinct biomes.
To get an idea of how big the map is, the developer posted a comparison of how it looks versus the game that inspired it which is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Indeed, it's so big that in the demo that's now available, it only has 5% of the whole map.
Talking about the map, developer Mraz revealed in a statement that they had so much fun in exploring what each area could offer that they didn't realize just how big the in-game map had grown. He went on to say that even after playing the game for six months, they "weren’t even halfway through."
Tombwater has players take on the role of a lone gunslinger who arrives in the accursed ghost town looking for a lost friend. It seems that the residents of this once-prosperous mining town have been afflicted by madness. Monsters and horrors now roam the streets though a few souls remaining with a sound mind.
The game has players dash and slash their way across combat versus unsettling eldritch beasts. They get to make use of an arsenal of firearms, blades, spells, apothecary items, and charms to develop their own playstyle to fight against the madness. Players can strike with a cavalry saber before dashing away to cast a spell, or they can equip a flame-imbued shotgun and a heavy mining pickaxe.
Other features of the game are:
- 2D Top-Down Souls-Like: Experience a Souls-Like from a new perspective. Nostalgic, gruesomely detailed pixel art in a top-down view with every classic Souls-Like mechanic.
- Map & Quest Log: Players can keep track of progress as they explore the inter-connected Wild West world of Tombwater with a map and quest log.
- Apothecary Crafting: Helpful tonics, explosives, and more can be crafted from materials players find while exploring to help aid you in battle
- Gruesome Boss Fights: Experience more than 20 horrifying boss battles that threaten to drive players to madness.
