The Deserters & Disciples DLC for Barony is finally here. It introduces new ways for players to approach the deadly dungeons in the game. In particular, there are five new races and classes, with each one bringing with them rich, fun, and unique mechanics.
In a post, Turning Wheel revealed like with the previous ones released, monster races have a preferred class which can also be used by humans. For the new races, players can either use their signature class or play as any of the stock classes from the game. Once they finish the game as a monster race, they can then unlock its signature class for any race to play. In addition, players can wear monster skins as a costume without any gameplay changes.
What can players expect? Let's start with Gremlins, who are short, wily, and pretty mischievous. They're the only race introduced by the DLC who Shopkeepers refuse to trade with. However, they do get an extra boost from vandalizing the dungeon.
Up next are the Sapper which starts with the Frypan to allow for on-the-go Cooking. They have a penchant for destruction especially with the powerful flail, flammable greaseballs, and the Booby Trap spell. Meanwhile, the Dryad is able to grow magical foliage to plant shrubs, heal friendlies, and produce nutritious nuts to eat. Its natural magic provides defensive thorns and roots in battle.
Another new addition is the Scion, who can show off the three new schools of magic with equal skill. They can summon the durable Earth Sprite as a guardian while also wielding the powerful Archon Scepter, rechargeable by sacrificing spells. Then there's the Myconid, who can grow a defensive cap that can be used to plant mushroom traps and doubles as a fungal food source. The thing is, the toxic spores of the mushrooms help weaken enemies for a decisive takedown.
The Hermit makes use of debilitating spells against enemies to empower a homemade shillelagh. They can take threats down with a mystical bonk. They have a beloved duck pet that's always nearby and can distract enemies when it isn't diving for fish. Gnomes have that nose for gold and improved magical prowess. However, in return they have limited potential in physical strength. While they're usually widely distrusted, their ability to fashion jewels can help them to make friends.
Bards play magical music to enhance their party with instruments that each provide a different inspirational buff. It's not all music since they also wield deadly rapiers that let them parry and riposte with expert finesse. The Salamanders' hearts blaze with magical fire and get hotter as they rampage. When cold, they are stony and tough. A hot salamander burns bright with glorious radiance.
Finally, there are the Paladins who can add holy light to their claymore's powerful strikes. They're perfect for banishing undead and demonic foes. Their Holy Symbols can be used to protect themselves and allies before a fight.
